Rumors: No Rodenbach and Hvedegoop Distribution in US and another new ‘Southern Tier?’

[7/24 Update: Latis Imports issued a press release on Tuesday that it has obtained rights to import Rodenbach to the U.S.]

These tips all came via posters at Beer Advocate:

Twin Cities Imbiber is reporting that, according to a Duvel rep, Rodenbach will no longer be distributing the U.S. No reason is cited in the article and it’s not clear, at the moment, whether it will be permanent. More information should come to the surface in the upcoming weeks.

Rumor is that Mikkeller’s collaboration with Three Floyds, Hvedegoop, despite being brewed here in the US, will be shipped off to Denmark for distribution. Some of the supply will stay at the brewpub and should be available in bottles at some point. No word yet on whether that will be available in time for Dark Lord Day but that could solve the problem of not being able to satisfy those around the US wanting to try this beer. Mikkeller also recently collaborated on ‘Eliot’ with Struise and ‘Tyttebaer’ with Nogne O. As for Hvedegoop, the Wheatwine took home a silver medal in the Chicago Beer Society Brewpub Shootout back in January.

Finally, it looks like Southern Tier may be poised to release another new beer. This is not in reference to the Creme Brulee rumor that we reported on a few weeks ago. Rumor is that Southern Tier has a Cherry Saison in the works. Roland and Russell, Southern Tier’s distributor, has it listed on an updated pricing sheet but the company has not returned an email requesting more information. If true, this would be the brewery’s second venture into Belgian beers. Its first, a Tripel, was met with mixed reviews.

Three Floyds’ Dark Lord Day 2008 Countdown Begins

(Munster, IN) – The most celebrated beer release in the US takes place on Saturday, April 26, in Munster, Indiana. Nick Floyd, founder of the brewery, aka Floydicus, revealed just some of the details of Dark Lord Day 2008 on both Beer Advocate and RateBeer recently. The event will take place all day from 11am-10pm with several bands playing music, and food and merchandise also being sold. It looks like Three Floyds will be improving crowd management for this one and going even further than that, delivering a “fest-like” experience for beer fans in attendance. Three Floyds Oak-Aged Dark Lord and Vanilla Bean Barrel-Aged Dark Lord will apparently be available on tap next to a lineup of real ales provided by a number of breweries. The brewery raffled off a few Oak-Aged Dark Lords back in 2006 and the beer was released previously. This will, however, be the debut of the Vanilla Bean version.

The other breweries representing with cask ales on tap include Pizza Port, Russian River, Firestone Walker, Goose Island, Flossmoor Station, Piece, Rock Bottom Chicago, and more to be named. No word yet on how many bottles will be released at DLD but, as always, more info as it comes…

Surly Bitter Brewer to arrive in cans

[4/3 Update - Realized that Surly had this listed up on their calendar: April 14th - Bitter Brewer release at Madcappers in Stillwater 7:00 - probably safe to assume that this is the release date for this beer but call around to your local beer stores to confirm]

(Brooklyn Center, MN) – Surly Bitter Brewer will become the 5th canned beer from the Minnesota-based brewery later this month. MNBeer.com first revealed the scoop yesterday afternoon and label approval came through late last night. The beer joins an already-canned lineup of Furious, Bender, CynicAle, and Surlyfest. Bitter Brewer has relatively few beer reviews so far on Beer Advocate but has the potential to become the top-ranked English Bitter on the site if its beer ratings continue their current trend. The brew weighs in at a light 4% ABV making it one of the few viable ultra-light alternatives out on the market going into the spring and summer months.

Quick hits: Serpent’s Stout, Pelican Brewery, Lew Bryson ends blog

courtesy of The Lost Abbey - Serpent’s StoutUpdated 4/1 (6:45pm EST) – Russian River Deviation is available at Bottleworks beginning today. It. will. not. last. long.

It’s official. Lost Abbey Serpent’s Stout is now available in select California locations including South Bay Drugs & Liquor in Imperial Beach. Port Moon Lit Sessions is also available.

If you are in San Diego today, consider going to the huge bottle release event at Alesmith. Bottles go on sale shortly after lunch but you may want to get there in the morning. People have been discussing the details on both the Beer Advocate and RateBeer forums so that will probably be your best source of information.

Pelican Brewery, based in Pacific City, Oregon, posted up a notice late Sunday that it is now shipping beer to customers. Pelican had a very successful showing at the recent Australian International Beer Awards. Their most notable beers include Pelican Stormwatcher’s Winterfest Barley wine, Pelican Tsunami Stout (foreign export stout), and the Pelican India Pale Ale. Shipping prices quoted on the site appear to be steep but you may be able contact the brewery and neogotiate terms based on how much you’re ordering. Beers for sale are not listed so you’d be advised to contact the brewery anyway, especially to ensure that Pelican can ship to your state.

Finally, Lew Bryson posted this morning that he’s done blogging, “Seen Through a Glass.” This is one of a few beer blogs out there for which I try to read every post. Bryson may still write for another project of his, Portfolio.com (not clear at this time). Bryson got a job with a PR firm and is excited about the new opportunity. Congrats and best of luck. (Nice spin on April Fools, Lew!)
