Yorkshire Stingo from Samuel Smith coming to the States

(North Yorkshire, England) – Samuel Smith Yorkshire Stingo, a beer of historic proportions, will ship to the U.S. through Merchant du Vin later this year. According to the back label pictured below, the beer is billed to have a rather interesting flavor profile: “fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours.” In part due to the extensive aging in oak casks for over a year, the beer has an ABV level of 8%. This would appear to make Yorkshire Stingo the second biggest (ABV-wise) commercial beer ever produced for the old brewery. It is brewed with a traditional method once popular in England using Yorkshire Squares. There is a full write-up for brewing history buffs at the Merchant du Vin site.

Label approvals also came through for Samuel Smith Organic Raspberry, Cherry, and Strawberry Fruit beers this week.

  1. is it really true that Stingo will be re-released in the States? As of this writing (July 5, 2009) I have not been able to find it in the Boston area, where I live. I loved this beer some 30 years ago, when it was readily available, but have not been able to find it since.

I would appreciate any more information about this.

  2. Hi Jill, I’m afraid I don’t have an update for this. There are no locations where it is available in the US according to Beer Advocate. It happens sometimes that a beer wont actually make it overseas despite getting label approved incase it were to happen. Given the length of time it’s been, I would assume we won’t see it though you may want to reach out to the importers.

  3. We are getting a two case shipment of Stingo today here in Cincinnati. So it has made it here to the U.S.

  4. 40 cases made it into VA, 6 to the Hampton Roads area. I received a case on 8/25. Had one last evening, DELICIOUS

  5. I’ll have to look for this one. I admit that it has been years since I had a Samuel Smith’s. I had my first at a pub with a fireplace in London. Good memories, wonder if that pub is even still there.

  6. The brewery will produce only 2000 cases of year. This year’s release is moving into the marketplace now. You only find it in the best beer stores and best beer bars.

  7. I work for a contracted wholesaler of MDV and our order of Stingo was just delivered (Only a few cases due to the small supply). I was allotted one bottle and am drinking it now. I would love to give a review, but cannot because with each taste their is a new flavour. If you live in my area (Northwestern PA) and read this on Saturday, October 10, 2009, you may have a small chance of obtaining a bottle. If you read this on Sunday, it’s too late.

  8. AJ’s Fine Foods at 10105 E. Via Linda St., Scottsdale, AZ will soon be getting in the only 4 cases in Arizona 🙂 phone no.: (480)391-9864. Enjoy!

  9. Had a couple at the winking lizards in ohio. It is my new favorite beer.:ave not seen it in cases yet.
