Another top 50 beer enters the U.S. fold

(Copenhagen, Denmark) – Mikkeller is set to ship over another new offering to the States this winter. Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch, a top 50-rated beer on RB got the nod from the good ole TTB and will be imported by the Shelton Brothers.

According to RateBeer, this was originally a “limited edition experimental brew for Ølbutikken in Copenhagen, Denmark and only sold in this one shop. Only 350 bottles of 25cl produced.” Last I heard from Mikkel, he noted that seven pallets would ship, stocked with around 1,080 bottles apiece (7,560). These will be sold in 50 cL bottles.

So what is special about this particular big beer (10+ % ABV)? “Shit coffee.” Here is a post from Wikipedia all about Kopi Luwak, a.k.a. Civet coffee, a.k.a. the most expensive coffee in the world. And here is the animal coffee that they are using.

“Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet […] The inner bean of the berry is not digested, but it has been proposed that enzymes in the stomach of the civet add to the coffee’s flavor by breaking down the proteins that give coffee its bitter taste. The beans are defecated still covered in some inner layers of the berry. The beans are washed, and given only a light roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop through the process.”

Kopi Luwak was also used to produce Alesmith “The Shit” Speedway Stout. That link will take you to a pic of a Owner/Brewer Peter Zien holding a bag of Kopi Luwak.
