Poll of the Day: Founders Backstage Series releases
With Founders Brewing likely to announce its next Backstage Series beer sometime this year, some are already speculating what that beer might be. If it is equally as sought-after as Canadian Breakfast Stout, how would you want the brewery to handle the release?
Breweries: Founders Brewing
Let the great people of Michigan have it. (I do not live in or near Michigan).
Distribute it only to southern California, obviously
I believe it should be handled with MICHIGAN as its main distribution point. Not to sound bias, being from MICHIGAN,but WE made this brewery what it is.So we should be first in line, Look at STONE,3 FLOYDS, etc. All their limited releases are in state ONLY! Problem solved.
Brewery only please. Might as well take care of the locals rather than sending 18 bottles to Massachusetts.
Technically, you guys were first in line. Stone typically releases its beers across its markets so not sure what you mean there. I believe Dark Lord is the only bottled beer that 3F keeps in-state but could be wrong.
Stone has brewery only releases called the Quingente Millilitre series of 500ml BA Beers that stay in state, in fact tons of breweries do this too. Founders should limit distribution to Michigan or keep it brewery only and up the allocations. CBS was a fiasco. If I were Founders I would do everything in my power to keep them from being sold on an auction site and more to get them in the hands of people from Michigan. Craft beer is not about hoarding and profiting but rather sharing and enjoying good beer!
Good point, Paul. I had forgotten about those ones. Surly and Darkness would be an even better comparison because I think the production numbers on those are similar.

Maybe the rare should not be so rare. Make enough to make hoarding unnecessary. This may take expansion but it would seem the best choice.
I’d like to put a good word in for a new restaurant/bar in Chicago called Farmhouse. They specialize in Midwestern food, wine and craft beers. My girlfriend booked the reservation and had the bright idea after dinner to ask the bartender if there was any chance that they had CBS (since she knew I had been on the hunt for weeks). To my surprise, a bottle was brought to my table and I was asked if I was interested. Delicious! I went back a week later with friends (and will continue to be a regular here to show my appreciation) and at the end of the night decided that “it couldn’t hurt to ask”. I was told that there was one bottle left and it was mine if I wanted it. This is classy (and no markup on the bottle) – thanks guys
Adam, 3F’s is distributed in a few states, how many ? But I think most craft breweries release their special stuff to the pub itself or keep it in their backyard. No slight but that’s how it should be.
