McKissack, who lives in Vidor, has been in the planning stages of opening Texas Big Beer in rural Newton County for 16 1/2 months. It wasn’t until the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission prohibition on using the word “beer” on higher-aclohol brews was lifted that he was able to get the actual name on the labels. (He’d planned to spell beer, “BIER” to get around the law.) He got TABC approval on Jan. 20 and is now waiting on label approval for Big Ass Blonde.
