Deschutes update: Collage, Twilight, Hop in the Dark, Black Butte XXIV

Deschutes Twilight Summer Ale

(Bend, OR) – Here is the latest from Deschutes Brewery. Lots of releases coming in May and June…

Two additional notes on Collage and Twilight not mentioned below from this past week’s email blast:

COLLAGE LAUNCH: On May 15th, twelve-ounce bottles will go on sale at our Bend and Portland pubs when their doors open at 11 AM (there will be a 3 bottle limit per person).

TWILIGHT LAUNCH: Join us at our Bend Pub on Monday, May 7th and at our Portland Pub on Tuesday, May 8th, around twilight (8:15pm-ish) as we toast Twilight Summer Ale for the first time this season. After the sun sets and all is dark, we will then raise a pint of Hop in the Dark in celebration of all that is hoppy & malty! In addition to having these two brews on tap for the first time this season, we will be offering a special menu sampler with shirts and six-packs of Twilight Summer Ale available for purchase.

Twilight Summer Ale

When: Available May to September

What: Summer Seasonal (6-packs, 12-packs and draft)

Spending more time outside playing after work isn’t the only sign of summer for Deschutes Brewery fans. They tell us they know summer has surely arrived when they start to see the soothing sight of Twilight Summer Ale on the shelves. We’ve found – and we’re sure you will too – that the vigorous hop essence of this brew is as essential to the season as baseball, BBQs and the smell of freshly cut grass. Twilight Summer Ale’s crisp wafer-like body complements its clever medley of four hops and malts. Whole flower Amarillo, Northern Brewer, Cascade, Tettnang, and Brambling Cross hops sing next to subtle Cara-Pils and Carastan malts. Start sipping the sunshine a little early this year with Twilight Summer Ale.  Its magic is guaranteed to make the summer seem longer.

Hop in the Dark – Cascadian Dark Ale

When: Available May to September

What: Bond Street Series (22-ounce bottles and draft)

Released a couple of years ago with great aplomb (it’s amazing what 22 test brews can do), this colored hop assault epitomizes the dark twist on the American IPA. After perfecting the recipe at both of Deschutes Brewery pubs with the gracious input from our fans, Hop in the Dark became a darling of the Black IPA movement. A cold steep of the malt to extract the color, a little dark Belgium candied sugar, and a big helping of  Citra hops—along with several more hop varieties—provides that floral aroma that everyone loves, but doesn’t necessarily expect, from a dark beer.

COLLAGE – Hair of the Dog Collaboration

When: Available mid-May

What: Conflux Series No. 1 (12-ounce bottles only)

The newest addition to our Conflux Series of collaboration beers, Collage showcases a joint creative venture that began more than three years ago between Hair of the Dog owner Alan Sprints and Deschutes Brewery owner Gary Fish. These master minds set out to create an intelligent blend of four world-class beers: Deschutes Brewery’s The Stoic and The Dissident and Hair of The Dog’s Fred and Adam constitute the “ingredients:” But like any experiment, this beer is much more than the sum of its parts. Aged for two years in barrels ranging from rye whiskey to pinot noir, the patience and curiosity that drove this brew to fruition is apparent in its final form. Astoundingly unique.

Black Butte XXIV

When: Available starting in July

What: Reserve Series (22-ounce wax-dipped bottles and draft)

Every June, Deschutes Brewery fans look forward to an anniversary celebration that changes a bit each year. Our brewers tinker with the recipe with some crazy ingredients (this year it’s dates and figs to replace last year’s orange and chilies) in order to meaningfully commemorate what’s made the brewery great over the last couple decades: experimentation. Black Butte XXIV, a double porter which follows the hop and malt lines of the brewery’s signature Black Butte Porter, is bourbon barrel aged and some crazy ingredient additions ensure that this anniversary brew stands alone. Like all of our Reserve Series beers, we encourage you to drink one upon its release and put some away for later. Some things just get better with age!
