Goose Island Bourbon County Stout going year-round in the future

Full-length retrospective on Goose Island a little more than one year after the sale to Anheuser-Busch. Includes this juicy little nugget…

The recent lease of a new barrel warehouse on AB’s dime has allowed Goose Island to double the size of its barrel program and will soon lead to Bourbon County Stout being made available available year-round.

No timetable as to when but it will probably be a while as that beer has to age.

  1. Isn’t a major driver of success with BCS the limited-quantity aspect? We won’t see people lining up in Chicago to get their hands on a bottle to add to their collection. Limited-release beers are hot right now and ditching that marketability will dim excitement about the brand…

  2. This is a victory for BCBS lovers. Who cares if it’s limited or not? As long as the product is continuously made at the high degree of craftsmanship as it has been, that is what matters. This is great news.

  3. Uh I like BCS because it’s damn tasty. Can’t wait to be able to trade for this on a regular basis and not have to give up my limited beers doing so.

  4. Isn’t the driving success the fact that it tastes good? Wanting a beer simply because it’s rare is stupid.

  5. Kudos to AB. (First time I ever said that!) I buy beer to drink, and because it tastes good, not to collect and brag about to my friends. When breweries put out very limited beers, I don’t get excited, I wonder ‘why are you doing that?’ You piss off more people than you gain as loyal fans. My local store was selling BCBS for $12. a bottle because they only had 1 case. And we didn’t even get 1 bottle of BCCoffee. That makes me want to boycott Goose Island and find other beers that I like just as well as BCBS. Last year I was buying all the BCBS I wanted for <$17. at my local supermarket. Now that's something to get excited about!

  6. BCS has been a success since it’s first batch in 1996, not because “ooh, it’s limited” but as others pointed out … it was damned good. Making it year-round probably makes it still a small-volume thing, just not “limited” in that crazed way we’ve got going on these days.

    Good move – anything that puts great beer into people’s mouths regularly is worth commending.

  7. Ken- I agree. Wanting the beer because it’s limited IS stupid. But if you go out and talk to retailers or try to sell them beer the first question out of their mouths is undoubtedly “what do you have that’s rare or limited?”. From a sales perspective I think GI will lose some brand excitement over BCS. It’s good for those of us who appreciate the liquid, bad for those who count down the days each year to the BCS release so they can run out and stock up to increase their “cellar cred”.

  8. Albert, speaking as a retailer, you’re dead wrong. I want beer i can sell all year round, not beer i get miniscule amounts of. One causes headaches, the other brings in revenue.

  9. It won’t bother me. I am troubled by what harm potentially AB will do to the good name of GI more than when I can get their beer. For me, I enjoyed the Stout during the time of year that it came out. During those months I am normally drinking more stouts anyway. So, if it comes out year round, I still will only be buying it during the colder months. I am a seasonal drinker. Certain beers are just better at different times of the year. During July, I am just not thinking “that what I need now is a good strong Stout. I just don’t see their sales being good during the Summer. And the same is, a lot of good beer will go to waste.
