Sponsored Press Release:

(Lake Forest, CA) – The Rare Beer Club® is collaborating with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, located in Dexter, Mich., to create a Flanders-style red ale brewed exclusively for members of the club.  The project will commemorate Rosie, a recently deceased 19-year-old orange Maine Coon cat owned by Kris Calef, owner of The Rare Beer Club.

“We’re 22 years into this business, and Rosie was with me for most of it, so it only seemed fitting to celebrate his life with an exclusive beer,” said Calef. “ I’ve got a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin’s La Roja on my desk because the artwork features this wild, swashbuckling red pirate cat, which always reminded me of him.  It seemed like a no-brainer to reach out to Ron and see if he had any interest. Lucky for me, he had owned a coon himself at one point!”

The beer will be featured in the club’s July 2016 shipment and will be named exclusively by the public. Rare Beer Club members and non-members can submit names for the beer on the official contest page.

The beer will be based on La Roja, an amber ale brewed in the Flanders tradition, which offers earthy caramel, spice, and sour fruit notes developed through barrel aging and naturally occurring Brettanomyces yeast and Lactobacillus bacteria.  It will be unfiltered, unpasteurized, and blended from barrels ranging in age from 2 to 10 months.  Founder/Headbrewer Ron Jeffries intends to bump up the ABV slightly and modify La Roja’s recipe to make the beer’s flavor profile even more assertive and bold in an effort to match Rosie’s personality.

Contestants are encouraged to check out the brewery’s beer selection to note the current voice and naming conventions used by the brewery.
