(Wayne, PA) – In looking up events last week on the BA calendar, I stumbled upon a beer auction taking place in Wayne, PA, this Saturday at noon. What initially peaked my interest was that the auction features a bottle of Portsmouth Kate the Great signed by Head Brewer, Tod Mott, as well as a bottle of Toronado 20th Anniversary. Come to find out, there is a lot more behind this auction.
Jesse Chew is a young guy with a love for climbing. He looks about my age (young-mid 20’s) and shares one of my passions: the mountains. I’m sure he’s a great guy and that we have a lot more in common. Unfortunately I do not know him personally so I am unable to dedicate this space to stories about him. What I do know is that Jesse faces a life-threatening battle, something no one should have to face at his young age. He was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer, Glioblastoma multiforme IV, a type of brain cancer. Jesse has written about his experiences and the disease at length in his facebook blog. Having a mother that was diagnosed with melanoma a year ago (a form of cancer that is, luckily, much more treatable), I contacted Kempleton at Beer Advocate, the event poster, to get more details on the auction and offer up my help in promoting it.
The event will benefit Jesse in his fight, one that has its own website now: Hold the Rope. The full details are there but the beer auction will be held at Teresa’s Cafe in Wayne, PA, this Saturday from 12 to 2pm. For those in PA, The Beeryard is located in the same town, making the trip all the more enticing. Here are a sample of the beers (and a few wines) to be auctioned, the full list being available on the site:
- 2008 Westvleteren 12 12oz
- Captain Lawrence Cuvee de Castleton – batch 2 – 750ml
- 2000 DeDolle Stille Nacht Special Reserva 2000 750ml
- 1999 Chimay (Blue) Grande Reserve 750ml
- Russian River Triple Pack: (1) Suplification 375ml, (1) Temptation 375ml, (1) Beatification 375ml
Even if you can’t make it, please consider donating something from your collection…or you can help spread the word by posting about the event in the forums, telling family, friends, etc.
