Beer notes: Surly hiring brewer and craft beer media bits

Surly Brewing

I am still working on researching and getting some stories done for the rest of the week. I had a suspicion that craft beer is getting a lot of attention in the mainstream media so here are some articles presented this morning for your reading pleasure (most from the last 24-48 hours) but first…

On the heels of a big win at the Autumn Brew Fest, release of Darkness Day info, and purchase of three new tanks, Omar Ansari posted yesterday on ProBrewer, that the brewery is hiring as it looks to amp us production. Details can be found over on the ProBrewer forums.

The L.A. Times has a thoughtful piece on women in the brewing (and homebrewing) world. They make mention of Tonya Cornett, who brought home the bacon from this year’s World Beer Cup. Former Steelhead Head Brewer, Teri Fahrendorf, is also mentioned. Fahrendorf is head of the Pink Boots Society, the largest organization of women in professional brewing in the country. She keeps an updated roster at the PBS site.

Meanwhile, the New York Times has a fairly detailed look at Oktoberfest beers with a ratings of the more accessible beers in the style at the end.

Speaking of Oktoberfests, the Paso Robles Press was on-hand to enjoy this past weekend’s kickoff to the Oaktoberfest event put on by the folks at Firestone Walker Brewing. As many of you know, Brewmaster, Matt Brynildson, Mikkel from Denmark, and many others are in England this week to take part in the JD Wetherspoon International Beer Festival.

On Tuesday, two grad students wrote the first article for a new craft beer column to appear in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Just another example that craft beer is starting to click with young people, too.

The Port Huron (MI) Times-Herald gives homebrewers some ink.

Craft beer also sees some rare press in Montana. Missoula’s New West has reports on Bozeman Brewing.

Even beer reviews are starting to see some mainstream space. See the Dallas Morning News’ review of Petrus Gouden Tripel.

And for good measure (and because it is a novel idea), overseas, a mix of books and beer finds success in Brussels.
