(Fraserburgh, SCOTLAND) – In late July, I mentioned a Brewdog beer called Speedball expecting it to arrive in the States soon thereafter. Unfortunately, the TTB wouldn’t have it so easy for anybody. As it turns out, Brewdog couldn’t bring this beer over as SPEEDball so they had to rename the U.S. version (surprised that the TTB let through all those poppy seeds though).
According to James Watt, Managing Director, “The name Speedball was actually rooted in the beer however as it is a mixture of natural stimulants and depressants.” Bummer. So what did they come up with?
Dogma.
Fitting for a country in which so many antique alcohol laws still exist because of stubborn beliefs.
“This ale is brewed with Scottish heather honey, Californian Poppy, Kola Nut and guruana (and of course hops!). The Kola Nut and Guruana are stimulants and the hops and poppy depressants. It is a really cool 7.8% beer, sweet fudgey and chewy initially with the honey coming through this beer has an amazing peppery finish.”
Watt said that the beer will ship later this week.
On a side note, Brewdog recently posted on its blog that it had brewed a beer with Mikkeller the week of Thanksgiving here in the U.S.:
“The 12.5% Barley Wine (
Divine Rebel
) is currently fermenting away, the champagne yeast drawing it ever closer to 12%. The beer was brewed with a single hop variety and is going to be partially aged in oak casks.” Look for this one in March (or perhaps later for the U.S.?).
