(Grimstad (Rygene), NORWAY) – Kjetil Jikiun of Nogne-O recently wrote about a new beer that he brewed in honor of a Norwegian legend that says that the sun turns on December 21, the shortest day of the year. Of course, the rest of the world would argue with the Norwegians that the sun doesn’t turn at all. But I regress…here are Jikiun’s brief notes about the beer,
Sunturnbrew
from his brewing session on the day of “sunturn.”
“Playing with 30% smoked malt and 20% rye was fun. I even enjoyed my stuck mash! I should probably brew more often, as I work the brewhose better than a computer.
The Sunturnbrew is now in it’s third day of fermentation, and I think this 26 Plato brew will be rather interesting. It is of course brewed totally out of style, but it could end up a smoked barley wine.”
50 IBU and 11% ABV. Nogne-O beers are imported through the Shelton Brothers though not all of their beers that get approved actually make it here to the States. We will keep our fingers crossed on this one as a smoked barley wine sounds pretty interesting.
Oh, and does anyone recognize the person on the beer label? I swear it is from a movie but can’t put my finger on it..
Perhaps you’re thinking of “Nanook of the North”?
no – it was a recent award winner from canada

It’s not exactly the same photo, but very similar.
