Shiner Kosmos Reserve returns after nearly a decade

shiner-kosmos

(Shiner, TX) – More news from the great state of Texas. Spoetzel Brewery will soon release another new beer on the heels of Shiner 100 Commemorator with a representative from Specs hinting that it could come in late February.

Shiner Kosmos Reserve

is a re-release of one Spoetzel appears to have released nearly a decade ago, old enough that you will see random references in a Google search though no RateBeer or Beer Advocate beer profiles exist.

From the back label: “Kosmos Spoetzl knew how to brew great beer. Born in Bavaria, Kosmos’ mastery of German brewing carried him as far as Egypt before he found his way to the small Texas town of Shiner. Our proud brewery still carries his name and commitment to excellence in brewing. This full-flavored, hop-jacked lager is every bit as unique as the man himself and our way of saluting the brewmaster who started it all.”

Unfortunately, the Spec’s rep notes that these will only be sold as part of mixed 6-packs and 12-packs.

  1. I hear it will not be the same beer as the old Kosmos. Just the same (or similar) name.

  2. Had one. It’s definitely not the same as the original Kosmos’ Reserve. This is more like their Kolsch-styler.

    Sign me, “Disappointed in Rhienhardt”.

  3. I was one of those random references that Google shows.

The last time I purchased Kosmos was in Jan/Feb of ’99. One six pack is all I have ever found. Great stuff. Strong as I recall too, I want to say the original stuff was around 9.5%.

I bought a case from a Sams Club in Fort Worth yesterday, a Shiner variety pack, and it has Kosmos. I truely believe it is relabeled Kolsch.

  4. I tried Kosmos for the first time this week. I thought it was great. Although the other beers in the variety pack are good, I would love a Kosmos 6er.

  5. I loved the original Kosmos Reserve and was very sad when it was discontinued. I just bought a mixed six pack called “Shiner Family Reunion” that includes a Bock, Blonde, Light, Black Lager and Hefeweizen (though mysteriously mine substituted that for Smokehouse Ale b/c I wanted to try one).

Frankly, it’s been so long I couldn’t tell you if it was a different recipe for certain. But just took a drink and it’s good. Not as life changing as I remember but good. Could be Kolsch.

Packaging is different than before, too.

  6. Had a Kosmos from the variety pack. Really liked it a lot. I don’t have a point of reference to the old one (and probably would not trust my memory on it anyway), but I think this is good on its own right.

What I’d really like is to be able to get it in a 6 pack by itself.

  7. Sigh. I made a trip to Texas; so disappointed though as all I could find was the standard Shiner Bock. No Kosmos. No Smokehaus. No Shiner 100. Damn!

  8. had the shiner family reunion. shiner kosmos was the best one of the bunch. can someone explain to me why i can’t buy a case of it??????

  9. I also thought that the Kosmos was the best out of the bunch, & wrote to Shiner and posted this response for ya…..

    Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your interest in Shiner Beers. We’re glad you enjoy Kosmos
Reserve! There are no plans at this time to put Kosmos in a six pack so
stock up on those packs of family reunion.

Meanwhile, come and see us…we’ll save a cold one for you!

So if you buy a FR 6pk in Pasadena & there are a few with dbl beers in ’em & no Kosmos, I have been there… lol…

  10. Visited brewery yesterday and would you believe the tour guide was the Anne Raabe Kirk got a reply from? I asked her if the recipe had been changed and she said it had. The original didn’t take off so the brewmaster came up with new recipe and they sell in the family packs to entice sales. Insert sad face.

Keep a look out for the new winter Shiner Frost, though. Very good stuff. I was first non-employee to sample at hospitality keg.

  11. I’m having my first Kosmos as I type this. It’s definitely a kolsch or something resembling a kolsch. Even the color is close to a kolsch. Whatever it is, it sure is good.

  12. o by the way jus slip in a few more Kosmos from other family packs in the store…..shhh….cashier dosen’t know the difference

  13. Kosmos reserve is the best beer that i’ve ever drank in my life time. I think the two best tasting beers in the world are kosmos, & hieniken. They should sell kosmos in both cans, & bottles.

  14. I agree there is something different but no matter Kosmos is the best of the group. Yes i’d love to get a case so I could be a better person (stop adjusting the sixers) Maybe do a sixer with blonde and kos.
