Part of the reason I posted this is because it mentions the use of Sorachi Ace hops from Japan and Motueka hops from New Zealand, two hops with which I am quite unfamiliar. Here is what I dug up:
Motueka hops
The most notable beer (that I could find) that uses this hop is last year’s fresh hop debut, Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale.
“An excellent hop in many applications from first kettle additions through to late gift. This hop offers a unique aroma and flavour making it suitable for producing bigger more traditional style Lagers, especially Bohemian Pilsener. Excellent when employed in multiple additions from a single hop bill and sits well on the palate to balance speciality malt sweetness. An excellent variety for Belgian Ales and gives a real edge to Cask Bitter.” – NZHops.co.uk
Sorachi Ace
This one appears to have been around longer, since the tail end of the 1980s. “Reportedly grown for several years at a Sapporo Breweries Hop Farm in China and exported to Japan and other countries. High yield potential; pleasant European aroma characteristics; high alpha acids potential.” – USDA
Can’t seem to find any beers made with this hop recently. This ought to be an interesting beer; more info is available in my Juxtaposition post from earlier this month . . .
Stone has some decent beers, butthe guy who runs the place (Greg)- is a complete asshole. I hope to see this brewery fail. There are so many better beers out of San Diego (Port, Coronado and Ballast to name a few).
