Beer notes: Surly Darkness, Lost Abbey Christmas in July

surlySurly Brewing will keep Darkness Day alive. The MN Sun reports that Surly Darkness will be sold in a festival atmosphere againthe sales will move to Brooklyn Center Liquor with Brooklyn Center Liquor leasing space in the brewery to legally facilitate sales.” As many folks know, Owner, Omar Ansari, had no choice but to change things up from the past. From a December 2008 message on the brewery’s website: “Per MN State Law (340A.301), Surly Brewing will not be able to get a license to sell growlers in 2009. In 2008, we sold over 3500 barrels of beer. The cut-off limit for getting the [on-premise] sale license is 3500 barrels.” To work around this inconvenience, Ansari and BC Liquor met with city councilors to discuss the idea earlier this spring. Councilors were supportive (tax revenue) and the result is that BC Liquor will lease some space in the store to the brewery for Darkness sales. Ansari is careful to point out, however, that it is not yet a done deal.

The Lost Abbey has announced a new release event in late July. On July 25, from 12pm to 7pm, the following beers will be made available:

Older Viscosity 2009
Angel’s Share Bourbon Barrel (750ml)
Duck Duck Gooze
(yes, the much awaited geuze beer)
Santa’s Little Helper Bourbon Barrel

Finally, in a very inconspicuous place, I found some info on The Bruery Two Turtle Doves, to be released this October: “Our holiday beer is a Belgian-style Dark Strong Ale, brewed with our brewery-made dark candi sugar, Munich and Vienna malts. Dark brown in color, fruity and complex with a rich malt backbone. This is a simple yet immensely complex beer meant to be savored and shared with friends and family. (This is actually the detail for Partridge in a Pear Tree though the style will change for the 2nd beer in the series. This came from an un-updated listing in Beertown.org’s seasonal beer database. Figures…I thought that listing was useless when I first saw it and this confirms it!). The second beer of our Twelve Days of Christmas vertical series, pick up a few to age and enjoy in 2019. (Release: December – March, Format: 750 mL bottles, 30L kegs).” It is expected to be released to the following states: AZ, CA, CO, MA, NJ, NY, OR, and PA.

  1. Hi Sage–

Where’d you find that text? I haven’t even decided what Two Turtle Doves will be, but I’m settled on it involving corn in some way, and of course it’ll be a Dark Strong Ale. The description above is for Partridge in a Pear Tree.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

  2. I think you got some deets backwards. I’m pretty sure Brooklyn Center Liquors is actually intending on leasing space in the brewery and that the space will not legally be considered a brewery for the duration of the lease. This would mean D-Day will remain in the same location.

As the BA forum states, “A lease agreement approved by the council allows Brooklyn Center Liquor to lease a space in the Surly Brewing Co. building, 4811 Dusharme Drive, to sell the beer for one day during the festival.”

  3. Damn, got 2 things wrong in 1 article! Think it’s been several months since I last done that though so I’m ok with it 🙂

    Thanks for the clarification.

  5. Actually, Ten Commandments will be a regular release and will be available in the next few weeks (just waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain). All the other special releases you list for our Christmas in July celebration are correct.
