Beer Notes Collaboration-style: De Proef, Terrapin to brew Imperial Flanders Red

Circling the wagons (and blogs) for info on new collaborations I haven’t posted about yet . . .

As mentioned in the RateBeer forums last April, Terrapin Beer Co. will be working with De Proef for this year’s Signature Series beer. I have learned an extra bit of information:

“Terrapin Brewmaster, Spike Buckowski, will join De Proef’s Dirk Naudts for the brew on March 8th. The brewers are currently fine-tuning the recipe details for an Imperial Flanders Red Ale. Anticipated availability date is August 1.”

Also of note . . .

“The 2007 & 2008 collaboration partners – Port Brewing and Allagash have agreed to re-releases of these highly-regarded beers. Look for Batch 3 of Signature Ale and Batch 2 of Les Deux Brasseurs to be re-released in mid-April. Batch numbers are noted near the government warning on the label.”

Terrapin Beer Co. will also work with Left Hand Brewing for the third consecutive year (not really news but may be to some).

An epic collaboration took place between Midwest-based breweries recently: Schlafly, O’Fallon and New Albanian Brewing. Hoosier Beer Geek got a chance to taste the beer (and take some pics) before it was released at the various breweries. There is a chance it is still available though it went on tap a week ago. Call ahead.

New Belgium Brewing released a collaboration beer with Red Rock Brewery called Paardebloem (Flemish for Dandelion). Utah Beer has the full report on the 150 bottles released.

Finally, the Washington Beer Blog reports on a to-be-named beer appearing next Thursday at Beveridge Place Pub and Naked City Taphouse: “A collaboration between Elysian Brewing and Green Flash Brewing of San Diego, brewed with pale and Munich malts and bittered with German Northern Brewer. Pink peppercorns and rose hips added to the kettle, with more pink peppercorns and 2 bushels each of Pink Lady and Braeburn apples added to the secondary fermenter. SG 15.2/1.061; alcohol 5.1/6.1.”

Obviously, there are more beer collaborations coming in 2010 and many that took place in 2009. Click that link to see what I’ve already blogged.

  1. Less than 5 months of fermentation and conditioning time for an Imperial Flanders Red ale? (March 8th with a release by August 1)… doesn’t seem like it can even be considered a Flanders Red ale at that point!

  2. Yeah, don’t ask me what “Imperial” means either. There should be a press release in the next month hopefully explaining it. I assume that De Proef has already brewed a batch or 2 and that they will blend it with this very young batch. So the question is whether 4 months is long enough for even one batch going into a Flanders Red. I don’t know the answer to that. Maybe I will pose it on Twitter/Facebook.

  3. John Maier of Rogue Ale brought one to a homebrew Xmas party in Newport, Oregon. It was superb. Maybe got bottle conditioned by December 2010.
