Ska Sour Ale, Oak-Aged Orange Cream Stout arrive in Colorado

(Durango, CO) – Ska Brewing will release two new beers very soon: Ska Sour Ale and Ska Oak-Aged Orange Cream Stout.


According to the Beer at 6512 blog, this is Ska’s first experiment into sour beers. Chuck Slothower reports, “The brewery will bottle a little over 100 cases of Ska Sour, which is expected to land at roughly 6 percent ABV.”
Ska Brewing Co-Founder, David Thibodeau, notes that the beer has been aging in barrels for over a year, a process during which Thibodeau added bugs like Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces.

It has already hit shelves in Durango in corked and caged, 750 ml, amber Belgian beer bottles. More bottles will roll out over the next couple weeks.

Here is the scoop on Ska Oak-Aged Orange Cream Stout, straight from Thibodeau:

“This is #14 in our Local Series beers, available mostly in Southwestern Colorado with extremely limited quantities leaking into the state’s Front Range. It is a 5.5% ABV Cream Stout brewed with milk sugar and aged for four months on sweet orange peels in Colorado Straight Bourbon casks from our own Peach Street Distillers.”

For those unfamiliar with the Local Series, this is the brewery’s limited one-off line, with numbering similar to how Harpoon Brewery does it with their 100 Barrel Series on the East Coast:

“Thomas Larsen, our Head Brewer, doesn’t seem to be satisfied with his pilot system, our 11-12 regular beers, and everything else we have going on, so occasionally he slips one of these “ideas” into the rotation knowing that we can use it in our Local Series. We’re working on a number of different stouts for a future project that for now I must keep under wraps, so this could also be considered “research.”

Both beers will only be sold in Colorado.

Finally, the brewery is working with the aforementioned blogger of Beer at 6512 on a brewery-blogger collaboration. They will be brewing the beer on January 25th. It will be an “imperial red ale, essentially a double-Pinstripe.”
