It’s interesting to watch this and compare it with the Simply Beer interview that I posted last month. Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV is a professional interviewer (and a multi-millionaire businessman) so I was surprised to see how he handled Brooklyn Brewery‘s Garrett Oliver. Oliver seemed to be almost on edge at times or at the least, having trouble keeping up with Vaynerchuk’s rapid pace. For example, it is clear that Oliver wants to talk about his barrel-aging projects toward the latter part of the interview, something that could be of great interest to Vaynerchuk’s wine-drinking audience, and Vaynerchuk cuts him off and goes into a different direction. I haven’t seen many Wine Library episodes but in the few that I have, Vaynerchuk seemed to be more attune to his guest.
I felt that I still enjoyed it because it is Garrett though I felt that Peter at Simply Beer got more out of Oliver by just letting him take control of the interview or at least staying out of his way. Keep in mind that Garrett even had a cold in that one.
Gary V. may know what he’s talking about, he may be a marketing genius, but I find him totally unwatchable. Beyond obnoxious to me.
Great interview. Gary V is famous for cutting his guest off. Although you can tell that the personality of Gary was a bit much for Garrett at first. I thought it went well though. I think from Gary’s defense he tries to keep things moving because he doesn’t want videos to get too long. 38 mins is long for a winelibrary TV ep.
