Harpoon Single Hop ESB uses mysterious Delta hop

(Boston, MA) – Harpoon Brewery will release its next beer in the 100 Barrel Series this coming April.

The label reads, “Hopped entirely with Delta- a new American hop varietal- this Extra Special Bitter has a unique earthy/fruity hop taste and a rich malt body.”

I couldn’t find a single reference to the hop varietal on Google and no U.S. brewers reported using this in 2008 or 2009 in the hop usage survey for The New Brewer. It sounds as though this hop is internally developed/proprietary? According to the comments, this is a new hop that’s been developed by Hopsteiner.

Session #31
ABV: 5.8%, 38 IBU, OG: 14.8
Available in 22 oz. bombers, sixtels and 50L kegs

In addition, the brewery has already announced the 2010 sessions in the 100 Barrel Series:

June 2010 – Land Bier (#32)
August 2010 – Wet Hop (#33)
November 2010 – Spruce Ale (#34)

Currently available in the 100 Barrel Series is Session #30, Island Creek Oyster Stout.

Other Notes:

Harpoon Leviathan Barleywine will make its debut in November. It’s the second of two new beers to debut in the series this year. The first is Harpoon Leviathan Imperial Red which is now available.

The brewery will also debut a new year-round beer next month, Harpoon Belgian-style Pale Ale.

Here is the rest of the 2010 schedule.

  1. Based solely on the handwriting I’m deducing that the brewmaster is 7 years old. Outstanding.

  2. It’s a new hop from Hopsteiner. They had a cask of IPA recently dry-hopped with this. VERY interesting profile. Peachy and mineral-y, just like Charlie says on the descriptor!

    Cheers!
