Doing some much-needed catch-up on canned craft beer today . . . we start with Grand Canyon Brewing, Sun King Brewing and 7 Seas Brewing.
Grand Canyon is releasing its first-ever pair of cans this month. Grand Canyon Sunset Amber Ale ships out this week and Grand Canyon Black Iron IPA is scheduled to ship out next week. Both will be in 12 oz. cans. The brewery has been updating fans on its Facebook page with step-by-step progress pics.
As mentioned yesterday, 7 Seas Brewing became the first “microcannery” in Washington with 7 Seas Ballz Deep Double IPA and 7 Seas British Pale Ale arriving in 16 oz. cans last month. Check out this interview on CraftCans.com for more on the brewery.
Sun King Brewing is the only active craft brewery in Indiana canning its beer. It introduced Sun King Osrisis and Sunlight hit the canning line early last month. Per Metromix, “Catering to a fad for craft brews and the popularity of cans, Sun King moved up the planned start date for its canning line by a year. To do it, the company’s five partners had to buy a canning line from a Canadian manufacturer, receive federal approval for their colorful designs and pay $40,000 for the minimum order of 150,000 16-ounce cans from Ball Corp.” Like 7 Seas, Sun King opted to go with the 16 oz. can.
Sun King is so good and their story is interesting too. Comcast Local On Demand–Inside Indiana Business has a great interview with the founders of Sun King about their craft beer. http://watchindiana.tv/category/news/inside-indiana-business/
Apologies on not catching this sooner, but Sun King is not the first craft brewery to can beer in Indiana. The late Warbird brewery out of Fort Wayne, IN was canning their beer when only a handful of other craft breweries were doing it. I believe they distributed to 5 states, including Texas. Canning was not successful for them and they ultimately switched full time to bottle production. Warbird closed their doors last year.
Sun King is certainly the only currently active craft brewery in Indiana to be canning their beer, though!
Good call, Rodney. Thanks, I’ll update it.
