Beer Notes: New Belgium, Pizza Port, Fulton Beer, Weyerbacher and more

This edition covers Pizza Port Brewing, New Belgium, Great Divide Brewing, Dark Horse Brewing, Arcadia Brewing, Weyerbacher and Fulton Beer.

…From Pizza Port Carlsbad‘s blog, “It’s the much-anticipated release of our monster IPA, Hop Suey! The new release features eight hop varieties in an incredible 11% Imperial IPA. Supplies are strictly limited! One growler fill per person per day, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.” The beer will be available on October 16th and 17th (or as long as supplies last).

…In the above video, the New Brew Thursday crew conduct a quick interview of New Belgium Brewer, Eric Salazar. One of the interesting tidbits picked up is that Tart Lychee, currently in the development/pilot batch phase, is being groomed for release as part of the Lips of Faith Series. It’s not set in stone but there’s a chance that this one could hit bottles in the future.

…In addition, New Brew Thursday also interviewed Brian Dunn of Great Divide Brewing recently. Dunn announced the entry of Great Divide beers into the SoCal market (they hit shelves within the past two weeks). And, in case you missed it, here’s a link to yesterday’s post about what is upcoming from Great Divide in 2011.

…It looks like Bell’s Brewery isn’t the only one expanding in Michigan. According to MLive.com, Arcadia Brewing sales will be up nearly 30% this year to around 9,000 barrels and they are adding more tanks. Dark Horse Brewing is projecting 9,000 for themselves for next year as they also add tanks. Dark Horse hopes to expand distribution to 10 more states.

…The latest from Weyerbacher courtesy of Head Brewer, Chris Wilson, “As I mentioned last month, it’s time for “Mike”. The newest addition to the Brewer’s Select Series, Mike will be a Belgian Style Dubbel. I just had a sample off the tank and it is going to be awesome. It has a rich malty character and a somewhat surprising dryness. It is still fermenting, so we still have a little while to wait until we know what it will be like. It looks like it will be around 7.7% ABV and it will be bottle-conditioned. Delicious! We will also be brewing up this year’s QUAD this month. I promise to make vintage 2010 as good as ever. I would tell you what else is coming, but I have been told it’s Verboten.”

…Finally, Fulton Beer releases the first of what are a couple dozen kegs of The Libertine on Thursday at Longfellow’s Patio Party. Per the email newsletter, “Like all of our beers, The Libertine has a backstory. It’s actually Fulton’s oldest recipe, based on one of our first deviations from homebrewing kits. It doesn’t fit neatly into any sort of beer style classification, but we call it an Imperial Red ale. Weighing in at 8.5% alcohol, it’s a rich, malt-driven ale brewed with Maris Otter and rye malt, giving it a distinct reddish hue and a surprisingly crisp finish for such a big beer. We named it The Libertine in honor of Jim’s yellow labrador, Liberty (aka Libby), who was always there while we brewed in his garage. Not really knowing what “libertine” meant, we looked it up and discovered that a libertine is someone who isn’t bound by societal norms or conventions. Similarly, our imperial red doesn’t play by the rules, so we thought it was a perfect fit.”
