Midnight Sun Update Part II: Obliteration VII, Good Mojo, Pop Ten

Obliteration VII

(Anchorage, AK) – Here is Part II of the Midnight Sun Brewing mega-update. Click here for Part I.

According to VP of Sales, Marketing and Business/Brand Development, Barb Miller, the first batch of Midnight Sun Obliteration VII is/was draft-only. A second batch, which Miller thinks is 15 or 30 bbls, will be all/mostly 22 oz. bottles. Release date for batch two is scheduled for December 3 at the brewery and it will take another couple weeks for the beer to get down to SF and SoCaL. [Ed. note: not sure on WA/OR/ID, sorry!]

Obliteration VII will be a heavily-hopped Imperial Stout that hits 8.5% ABV and 100 IBUs. The hop mix for this one is Warrior, Magnum and Nugget. The roman numeral denotes this as the seventh in a series. Generally, the brewery opts for Double IPAs here but this will be the first time they go with an Imperial Stout in this series.

Series Description: “With passion and purpose, we present this series of hop-centric beers. Using different hop varieties and brewing techniques, we aim to capture bold, distinct hop characteristics in aroma, flavor and finish. While we explore the world of hops, we invite you to learn along with us: these beers offer an incredible opportunity to experience the diversity of hops while engaging the palate and obliterating the senses.

On Tuesday, December 21st, Midnight Sun will release, for one day only, Good Mojo Sour Brown Ale. At this point, there is likely less than one barrel remaining so the brewery will not be bottling it or selling growlers. This beer was originally brewed for the 13th anniversary and is nearing 10 years old.

Beer description: “Good Mojo Sour Brown Ale is a blend of new [70%] and old [30%] beers. The new is brown ale with sour cherries, fermented with a Belgian yeast strain. The old is seven-year-old beer to which berries, lactobacillus, pediococcus, and
brettanomyces were added along the way. This sour beer aged in American oak Cabernet Sauvignon barrels for four years before being transferred to stainless kegs, where it continued to do its magic for the last three years. In May 2008, the sour funk was blended with the fresh brown ale, then keg-conditioned with yet another Belgian yeast.”

Last but not least, there are still five more beers to be released in the 2010 Pop Ten Series. Ignore the months listed below as they are listed in the originally suggested order of release. I neglected to get an update on this project but, obviously, they will spill into 2011 if Midnight Sun goes through with brewing them all…

JUN – HEAD BANGER – Belgian Malt Liquor – lots of sugar, herbs, spices
SEP – HOT MESS – Belgian Quadrupel – cinnamon, cloves, anchos, chipotles
OCT – WHATEVER – Berliner Weiss – fermented, aged, “soured up” in oak
NOV – WANNABE – Belgian Saison – wine grapes, aged in French oak barrels
DEC – BARFLY – Smoked Imperial Stout – smoke, wood, leather, tobacco
