(Copenhagen, DENMARK) – A new release coming from Mikkeller in 2011…
Note: before we get too far, there is an error on the approved label. The beer is aged in Sauvignon Blanc wine barrels, not Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels.
With that said, here is the scoop on Mikkeller Nelson Sauvin Brut from Mikkel:
“The beer is the same as Nelson Sauvignon brewed for New Years last year. It was not released in the US. It is a light colored belgian ale brewed with Nelson Sauvin hops, enzymes for dryer ebd-result, aged in white wine barrels and highly carbonated. The beer is inspired by champagne.
We are shipping 550 cases (6 bottles x 750 ml) to the US but not in the next three months as it is in the barrels right now.”
Cabernet Sauvignon vers. Sauvignon Blanc vers.? When the Nelson Sauvignon was released the first time the saying was that it was aged on Austrian Chardonnay barrels?
Mikkel said it should say Sauvignon blanc on the label. No clue on what it used to age in…if that was the case it should have been called Nelson Chardonnay!
The first one was aged in Chardonnay barrels from Austria and NOT Sauvignon Blanc barrels (SB is almost exclusively aged in steel in Austria).
If Mikkel has found SB wood barrels in Austria it is quite some achivement. Maybe it is aged on steel barrels that contained SB!!!!!
And the name Nelson Sauvignon a word play…Sauvin….Sauvignon…..
You are correct, Henrik. I don’t know where these SB barrels are sourced from but the 1st version used chardonnay barrels.
It is always fun when other people know more about your beers then you do yourself…
Yes that must be fun!
May I ask who sourced the Austrian SB barrels.
They are not from Austria – who (beside Henrik who obviosly dont know) said they were?? I cannot tell where I got the barrels used for this years version, sorry!
