Narragansett Porter tallboy cans to debut in November

narragansett porter(Narragansett, RI) – Narragansett Porter will hit taps and cans next month.

The brewery will release the beer on tap and, for the first time, in 16 oz. cans around mid-November. Cans are expected to retail for $7.99/6-pack. For a beer that has received “very good” reviews so far at Beer Advocate and is 7% ABV, that price point is surprisingly low. It may not compete with the “value” of malt liquors like Steel Reserve and Four Loko but it presents a better value than even some of the macro beers on shelves like Bud Light. Pretty unreal considering the economies of scale achieved by the big brewers…

Description: “Gansett Porter offers an extremely approachable craft experience that is not overly smoky or bitter. It has a deliciously mild chocolate malt flavor with just a hint of smokiness, and hops to balance out the finish. It is brewed with summit hops, black malt, pale malt, roasted barley and ale yeast, and then dry hopped with Amarillo hops. 7% Alcohol by Volume & 22 IBU’s”

There is some history behind the beer as well… “Narragansett Porter was originally brewed in 1916. Porter helped the brewery survive Prohibition via a patent received from the U.S. Government to brew it for ‘medicinal purposes.'”

Though the label indicates that the beer is contracted out, ‘Gansett says that this is “brewed under the supervision of award-winning Brew Master, Sean Larkin, from Trinity.”

  1. “Award winning”… That’s funny. I think all his awards are from the pretty lame GIBF held in Providence.

Go to Trinity and try his beers for yourself. They’re pretty bad. He has no quality control. And while I might sound like a hater, as a Providence resident I want Trinity to be good. It has the potential to be, and sometimes is, great, but it usually falls short.

  2. Jim…didn’t he pick up a medal at the GABF this year for his Double IPA? Pretty tough category right there.
