Surly Darkness Day 2010 recap

(Brooklyn Center, MN) – Some random links and notes to recap Surly Brewing‘s Darkness Day 2010. Note: the video above has a bit o’ the old profanity.

-Surprisingly, I haven’t seen much in the way of mainstream media or blogger coverage from the event but you can click here for all the Darkness Day messages from people who were there.

-Approximately 40 listings have gone up on eBay for the beer in the 72 hours since the release began on Saturday. That’s not far off from the Three Floyds Dark Lord figures in which approximately 50 listings went up in the 72 hours after this past April’s release.

-There are approximately 120 Surly Darkness/Darkness Day threads on Beer Advocate posted within the past week with over 100 of those being in the trading section of the site.

-Photos! There are 100+ pics up on Flickr. Here are another 16+ pics (not thumbnails so page loads slowly). Maybe you will see yourself?

-Finally, not much up on the web in terms of videos. The above clip is taken from Surly Brewing Brewmaster, Todd Haug, on his bike. Below is a 6-min video spanning the line again when it is even longer.

  1. Could this beer be that great? What is it about “cult” beers that makes people want to stand in line? Its not about the beer but you people in line – more power to you.

I’d love to blind taste this beer. Actually, I’d love it even more if people rated beer with their palates and not their eyes.

I once did try the “cult” Dark Lord 2008. Cloying, heavy, ponderous and impossible to enjoy more than 6-8 oz. Yet people stand in line all day for it.

  2. You’re right, Mr. Fresh- everyone’s crazy but you.

Or maybe it’s that these events are fun and that these beers – if you find them cloying or not – are each one of a kind in their own way. Do I need to drink a whole bottle of Dark Lord? No. I need to share a bottle of Dark Lord with my friends.
