(South Burlington, VT) – Magic Hat Brewing will take beer drinkers down memory lane late next year.
According to a source, Ravell and Humble Patience are slated to return in the fall and winter 2011 variety packs. Between Archive.org and Beer Advocate, I think I was able to piece together the history of these two beers.
Ravell was a porter brewed with whole vanilla beans that made its debut as a one-off around 1999. The beer was moved to the seasonal rotation later around the time that Humble Patience, an Irish Red Ale, launched as a year-round draft-only beer. Humble Patience was soon bottled beginning in 2001. Magic Hat ceased bottle production of both beers in 2005 though Ravell kegs kicked around through 2007. So both beers are returning to bottles after what will be a six-year hiatus.
The recipes were tweaked for both beers over the course of several years, Ravell more substantially than Humble Patience as you can see:
Ravell current
Hops: Willamette, Tettnang, East Kent Goldings
Malts: Chocolate, Crystal, Cara and Rolled Oats
Ravell old
HOPS: Warrior, Fuggles
MALTS: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate
I definitely welcome the return of Ravell to their line-up. One critical ingredient missing in the lists above are the vanilla beans used to make this brew… a vanilla porter. I am really looking forward to trying it again… hopefully it will be just as good this time around!

I believe Humble Patience originally was just Bob’s First Ale, but on nitro-tap. Before it went away, I think it was offered in bottles too, pretty much a relabel of Bob’s First Ale, probably because it’s such a cool name.
Ravell is also a welcome return.

I am in agreement with Steve K on this one. In fact I just got done ripping the owners of Magic Hat a new one on facebook over their discontinuation of Ravell and their response was to link me to this page.
Haha, this message made my day, Thomas. Thanks!
Humble Patience is the best beer ever brewed by Magic Hat! Can’t wait til this fall.
