(Rochefort, BELGIUM) – A fire engulfed part of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, no one was injured and the brewery where Rochefort beers are made was spared from damage for the most part. If I’m interpreting the article below correctly, 27,000 liters or approximately 231 barrels were destroyed in the fire. [Update: The brewery has come out and said that this report is incorrect.]
From rtbf.be:
A major fire broke out around 18:30 Wednesday in the church of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy. Several fire departments responded to fight the fire. Around 19:45 the fire was contained. The brewery is intact.
Four buildings on a length of 70 meters were engulfed in flames not far from the library and brewing vats and care for the famous Trappist beer. These are not in danger. There are no victims.
The cause of the fire are still unknown but a problem of electric generators could be the basis of the claim. The Fire Commander Rochefort has called on his colleagues Ciney Beauraing, Power and Dinant. Some seventy firefighters responded.
From Nieuwsblad.be:
Several fire departments were called. Rochefort asked the firemen to strengthen the forces of Ciney, Dinant, Beauraing and Marche-en-Famenne. Seventy firefighters had the fire under control eventually.
The fire service continues throughout the night on site to prevent the fire flares up again and not to the affected buildings to preserve.
Four vessels of 27,000 liters Trappist destroyed. The nerve center of the brewery had no damage. The library was saved.
The abbey of Saint-Remy, where it is brewed Trappist Rochefort, has 35 people working there daily.
A number of roads in the vicinity of the abbey is closed to traffic to the fire do not hinder them.
