Port Barrel Aged Bare Tree

(Warrenville, IL) — This holiday season, Two Brothers Brewing Company presents a limited release of 15 6-liter “Methuselah” bottles of the 2009 vintage Bare Tree Weiss Wine aged in port wine barrels.

Each bottle has been uniquely hand-painted and signed by brewery founders Jim and Jason Ebel. Starting December 10, the bottles will only be available for sale ($200) at the Two Brothers Tap House (30W315 Calumet Ave.Warrenville, Illinois 60555). Two Brothers has brewed and released a batch of Bare Tree every year since 2000—the 2010 vintage will be released on December 14. Each vintage utilizes the original recipe for our year-round hefe weizen (Ebel’s Weiss), but brewed to a much higher strength. The result is a beer reaching upwards of 13%. The beer’s traditional clove and banana notes give way to melon and fleshy fruit, deep caramel and black pepper characteristics. Bare Tree is a beer that can certainly be enjoyed fresh, but grows in complexity with age. The limited 2009 port-barrel-aged version will showcase how Bare Tree changes over time, and the time the beer has spent in port wine barrels leave subtle hints of dark fruit and a rosy hue you won’t find in the annually released vintages of Bare Tree.

“This was a project that allowed me to blend together my passion for our beer with my love of vintage port,” says Jason Ebel. “And since the 6-liter presentation lends itself to holiday gatherings and feasts, we thought now would be an ideal time to release it.”

Two Brothers Brewing Company: After living in France, brothers Jim and Jason Ebel developed a passion for flavorful specialty beer. After returning to the states, they had trouble finding that type of beer in Chicago so they opened Two Brothers Brewing Company in 1996. To get them started, the Ebel brothers’ grandfather, a retired dairy farmer, donated his bulk milk tanks, which were quickly converted to fermenters. Currently, the brewery resides in a 40,000 square foot facility 30 miles west of Chicago. In addition to their traditional style beers, Two Brothers Brewing Company produces many specialty beers including a line of oak aged ales. Adjacent to the brewery, Two Brothers Tap House opened in 2008 as a restaurant, which serves elevated, seasonal, and organic American pub fare. Two Brothers Brewing Company’s award winning products are currently available in Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, and New York.

  2. Really – I’m just wondering , who in their right mind would spend $200 on a large-format bottle of beer(?) and age it for complexity? OK its the holiday season, cool it Johnny

Question: Where were the port barrels obtained from? Anyone? Jason?

If you want port, drink port. Beer will never be wine – that’s the paradox. I am a beer advocate.
