Shmaltz Update: Genesis 15:15 and more

(San Francisco, CA) – Some updates from Shmaltz Brewing

[Correction from brewery: “Genesis 15:15 will actually not be part of our Jewbelation anniversary series, nor will it be a new version of Rejewvenator. This will be a stand-alone anniversary celebration beer. We’ll be holding off for a year or so for Rejewvenator: Year of the Olive. You can definitely expect Jewbelation 15 though, brewed once again with 15 malts, 15 hops and 15% alcohol content.”]

Shmaltz founder and owner, Jeremy Cowan, has been doing the “press tour” and promoting his recently released new book, Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah. Along the way, he’s provided info on some upcoming beers. Per the Washington Post:

To celebrate his 15th anniversary in brewing next spring, he plans to release Genesis 15:15, a strong amber ale brewed with four fruits mentioned in the Bible: pomegranates, figs, dates and grapes. (The Biblical verse referenced consists of God’s assurance to Abraham: “And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.”)

Cowan told The Brewing Network that the beer was brewed this month and is being aged in Sazerac rye whisky barrels. It will be released shortly after passover in April. Next year’s anniversary beer, another rendition of He’Brew Rejewvenator, will feature a new ingredient, olives.

Cowan added that he and a bunch of other brewers that are members of the Jewish community are considering doing a Christmas vs. Chanukah collaboration beer project that would result in a 750ml bottle release. He noted a list of potential partners on the project including Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada Brewing, Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog and Pete Slosberg of Pete’s Wicked Ales.

Also of note from the WaPo piece:

Sometime next summer, he’ll debut what he calls the country’s smallest fully licensed commercial brewery, capable of producing beer in one-gallon batches. The brewery and tasting room will occupy a 175-square-foot storefront adjacent to the Coney Island Circus Sideshow in New York City.

Based on the interview, it sounded like this “brewery” may already be operating. The brewer, who is also part of the Sideshow, happens to be “the smallest brewer in the world” according to Cowan.
