(Seattle, WA & Fort Collins, CO) – The two breweries collaborate on The Trip VIII and some more New Belgium approvals…
Before we get into the Elysian Brewing newsletter update attached below (sent just over a week ago so a bit late), New Belgium got two keg collar approvals this week (that, just to be clear, have nothing to do with Elysian). It looks like the brewery is aging New Belgium Love in new barrels: Apple-flavored Whisky and Peach-flavored Whisky. To date, I’ve only seen a listing online for Love in Blackberry-flavored Whisky barrels so these appear to be new.
As for those unfamiliar with Love, the late Bill Brand posted this back in 2008: “[This beer is] not usually kegged as it is used as the starter for all of New Belgium’s wood beers. Started as a brown ale brewed with cherries, barrel aged for 3 years, giving this specific barrel a unique blend of bacteria and yeast, which make the final product a manifestation of New Belgium’s unique specialty styles.” One of those being the popular La Folie…
Now to the newsletter update:

The Trip VIII Imperial IPA was brewed at Elysian Capitol Hill with the help of Alex Jesse visiting from New Belgium.
“The main idea behind Trip VIII was to brew a true Northwestern Imperial IPA, instead of a Californian or American IPA….I thought the whole story behind the Falconers Flight hops was really cool: a blend of NW hops to commemorate a NW brewing Legend and help send brewers to Seibel was awesome… The craziest part was I had no idea that Markus from Elysian was the first scholarship winner! The Pale Malt is grown and malted in the NW also.” – Alex Jesse, New Belgium Brewing Co.

FALCONER’S FLIGHT HOP DETAILS:
Hopunion has a new limited-release, first-time custom-blended hop pellet called Falconer’s Flight. Partial proceeds benefit the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation that awards a scholarship to a Northwest brewer each year. Falconer’s Flight is a proprietary pellet blend comprised of many of the Northwest’s most premier hop varieties including the highly acclaimed Citra, Simcoe, and Sorachi Ace along with experimental hops and numerous other NW varieties. It is a one-time release, with specific lots for this blend personally selected by Hopunion’s Jesse Umbarger (who previously brewed for Rio Bravo Brewing Co, San Ysidro Restaurant & Brewery, Wild Duck Restaurant & Brewery, West Brothers, Ice Harbor, and Steelhead Brewing Company).
