(Boston, MA) – Boston Beer Co. could be planning to put a twist on its Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA brand.
Nothing has been confirmed yet though the brewery got a number of Latitude 48 label variations approved this week. The labels each feature a different hop that is a component in the regular version: Hallertau Mittelfrueh Noble hops, East Kent Goldings, Zeus, Simcoe®, and Ahtanum. One might surmise that these are slated to go with the original in a mixed 12-pack (or 6-pack?). Variety packs have been a major mover for Samuel Adams and this is certainly a creative use of the package. It would be the widest, most affordable single hop set made readily available across the U.S. to date.
This pleases me to no end

Hmm… BrewDog released a similarly-styled single hop IPA breakdown months ago… Once again, even if it IS well-done, easily available, and tasty, Sam Adams comes off to me as a reactionary, rather than a revolutionary.
Well, I think that’s par for the course in any industry though. It’s a lot easier for small companies to take risks because the impact of failure is much lower. To Sam Adams’ credit, they were among the first craft breweries in the nation and they’ve put out Utopias and some other one-of-a-kind beers over the years. They are among the first to release a set of single hop beers, too.
I’d rather gouge my eyes out. The only hope for this 12-pack is that the parts are better than the sum. Latitude 48 tastes like they ground up a truckful of mediocre hops and dumped them into a Busch Light.
