What does Francis Ford Coppola have to do with Three Floyds? This and more in an Eastern edition of beer notes…
Cigar City Brewing: CCB is releasing some ISO:FT and Marron Acidifie today. Click over to the blog for the details. Also of note, bottled this week…Neilsbohrium.
Founders Brewing: The brewery announced this week that it will be bottling beers in 750s at some point though no beers have picked yet. There is some speculation that a rep claimed that Canadian Breakfast Stout would be one of the beers but the brewery has made nothing official (and actually said that CBS won’t be bottled previously). Who knows… Incidentally, there is some chatter in that thread about the Nemesis brand being discontinued due to alleged trademark infringement. DuClaw currently has a registered trademark for Nemesis when it comes to beer. It goes without saying that Founders will continue making one-off beers in the spirit of Nemesis going forward anyway. A rep with Founders couldn’t be reached for comment.
Terrapin Beer Co.: Co-Founder, Spike Buckowski, was a guest on WILK Radio for Friday Beer Buzz last week and revealed that Side Project Beer #16 would be called Flux Capacitor. #15 is called Indiana Krunkles (bottled last week) and is inspired by Indiana Jones. #16 will contain Back to the Future references says Buckowski. Perhaps Terrapin will take a page from New England Brewing and make a Star Wars-themed beer for #17?
Breweries have been the subject of trademark disputes with movie studios in the past so Terrapin should tread carefully. LucasArts forced a change in branding for NEB’s Imperial Stout Trooper and The Trustees of The Coppola Family Trust challenged Three Floyds on Apocalypse Cow. It looks like the Coppola Trust dropped the case because AC is registered with the U.S. Trademark office as of January. [UPDATE: Made that bold.]
Shipyard Brewing: The brewery recently posted a bit of information on its May Pugsley’s Signature Series release, Smashed Blueberry. “This beer is a hybrid between a Porter and a Scotch Ale. This beer has a rich mouth feel and a body of complex intensity. Upfront, there are distinct flavors of coffee and chocolate beautifully accentuated by the aroma of fresh blueberries. The finish features a delicate balance of sweet fruit and dry hops.”
Laurelwood Brewing: Laurelwood will make its debut in Philly…but for one week only. Chad Kennedy confirmed that Laurelwood beers will be available for some events for Philly Beer Week but that they aren’t opening up distribution there. He is originally from the area.
Half Acre Beer Co.: From the blog, “Marty Stouffer’s Wild America Barleywine is on schedule and ready to release on Friday [4/8], as planned. 22oz. Bomber bottles: $10.99. Growler Fills: $18 ($22 w/ Growler). We also have another one-off to be released next Wednesday 4/13. It’s a Kolsch called The Crusch. This will be a draft only release for growler fills at the brewery.”
Troegs Brewery: Per the latest newsletter, both Sunshine Pils and The Flying Mouflan will be available in a week or two. Scratch #43, an IPA, was just released at the tasting room. OG: 16.3, ABV: 6.7%, Malt: Pils, Munich, IBU: 85, Hops: Bravo, Chinook, Cascade, Yeast: House Ale, Dry-hopped: Cascade.
D.C. Brau: Launch party on April 15th.
Flying Fish Brewery: They are bringing back a previous Exit Series release on draft in June. Vote here for which beer it should be.
Williamsburg Alewerks: Bourbon Barrel Porter coming in two months…
Iron City Brewing: There is a possibility that some facilities will be partially converted to a movie studio.
Huh? Nothing about 3Floyds in here…
Sorry, I didn’t have a part dedicated to Three Floyds but it was part of a discussion with Terrapin making beers based on movie characters/themes.

I suppose the line above the fold implied that I have more info than that but that’s all I got. I hadn’t heard it before & thought it was interesting when I found out.
Sunshine Pils is already available at the store I work at in MA.
I also heard firsthand that CBS will be one of the 750s.
