In this edition, news and tidbits from Sierra Nevada, Bell’s, Short’s, Capital, Summit, (512), Three Floyds and Half Acre…

Sierra Nevada Brewing: Craft Cans reported on Tuesday that the brewery has decided on its initial offerings in cans: 12 oz./12-pack for the Pale Ale and 16 oz./4-pack for Torpedo. More to come on these late 2011 releases…

Bell’s Brewery: Bell’s is adding date stamps onto its bottles. Some batches between March and April will have date stamps on them and some won’t. Beginning April 25th, every batch bottled will be date-stamped. The new system will compliment the existing batch code system, one that will still be used going forward.

Short’s Brewing: Some 7th anniversary party details… “We will have about 30 beers on tap for you to try, including several new beers never served at our pub before, plus cask Anniversary Ale, Cask Golden Rule, and two other specialty casked beers to be announced! These special cask beers kick off of our Real Ale Program, and you will not want to miss them! Aside from the new cask beers, the beer list will include: Anniversary Ale, Huma Lupa Licious, Magician, Pandemonium Pale Ale, Soft Parade, Bellaire Brown, Autumn Ale, Village Reserve, Locals Light, Pontius Road Pilsner, Chocolate Wheat, Sustenance Black Ale, Rye Not, Belgian IPA, Black Licorice, Bludgeon Yer EyePA, Bananarama, Key Lime Pie, Curl, Hangin’ Frank, Carrot Cake, Mama’s Milk, Richard in the Dirt, Pineapple Side Down, Whiskey Sour, 2008 Black Cherry Porter, 2008 Chocolate Raspberry Shorter, 2008 Noble Chaos. In addition, Bourbon Sustenance, Bourbon Black Cherry Porter, Bourbon Wizard, and Good Samaritan will be available to those touring our brewery.”

Capital Brewery: An interesting anniversary project has started in the Midwest. Madison.com reports, “On April 17, Brewmaster Kirby Nelson will brew the seed beer for what will become “Eternal Flame,” a vertical beer that will begin with a hybrid recipe of the brewery’s Autumnal Fire and Eisphyre beers.

The 50 barrels brewed April 17 will sit for a year. Then next April, Nelson will brew another 50 barrels and blend it with the 50 barrels brewed this year. After a two-month aging, 50 barrels of the mixture will be bottled in June 2012. The remainder will age for another year and then another 50 barrels will be brewed in 2013 and be mixed with the aged beer. Another 50 barrels will be bottled and sold in four-packs, with the remainder stored for the following year’s batch. The process is intended to go on for years.”

Summit Brewing: Next beer in the Unchained Series will be Honeymoon Saison, a beer brewed by Sam Doniach. It is slated for a July release per MNBeer.

(512) Brewing: Per the brewery blog, “Yes, this year’s edition in 750ml bottles is making its way to stores now. Email me here (kevin -at- 512brewing -dot- com) to find our where you can get it. This is a stronger, more intense version of our famous Pecan Porter recipe aged 2 months in Maker’s Mark Bourbon barrels. Same format as last year, but this time a few more to share – approximately 80 cases (5x more than last year!).”

Three Floyds Brewing: Three Floyds has issued a few tips for a successful Dark Lord Day.

Half Acre Beer Co.: The Crusch was released today (4/13).

  1. Seems like Sierra got it backwards…. Why package the stronger beer in bigger cans. Makes more sense to put the IPA in 12 oz cans and the pale ale in 16oz cans.

  2. I’m with Jason for the most part on this one. More people would think of the Pale Ale as more of a session beer than Torpedo & it makes sense to put that in a higher volume package (12-pack) for group trips/events. Between the function & novelty of the beer being in cans for the first time, they can justify that it will sell just fine in a 12-pack.

Torpedo’s packaging is more debatable. It has a smaller audience so a 4 or 6-pack makes sense. I’m just curious how they came to the decision to go with the 4-pack over 6-pack & 16 oz. over 12 oz.
