(Portland, OR) – As part of a vast number of changes to the brewery’s branding and portfolio this year, Widmer Brothers Brewing will be making a few tweaks to its Brothers’ Best Variety Pack and getting rid of a longtime offering.
Anyone following the business side of craft beer knows that variety packs have been a huge hit in recent years. The package plays off of the rising popularity of seasonals and the beer drinker’s tendency to try new products across a brand.
Widmer Brothers has offered an assortment of mixed packs in the past and is making a change going forward. The new mixed pack will include two year-round beers, Hefeweizen and Drifter Pale Ale, as it normally has. The other two slots will be filled by rotating beers: a) an IPA from the Rotator Series and b) a seasonal release.
Seasonal releases include: the new Citra Blonde Summer Brew, Brrr Seasonal Ale and Okto Festival Ale.
The Rotator Series includes: the soon-to-be-released X-114 IPA, Teaser Ale, Shaddock IPA and Collaborator IPA.
The same rep said that Drop Top will be included as well in the 12-packs though I’m hoping to get more clarification on that later (it’s now after work hours on the West Coast).
What might stand out to some is the absence of Broken Halo IPA. This beer is typically part of the mixed pack as well as a standalone 6-pack/draft release. A brewery representative confirmed that it will be phased out of the brewery’s portfolio. Broken Halo was first introduced in late 2006.
Mixed 12 packs are the second best invention to beer itself. EVERY production brewery should strive to produce one!
Yup, I’m definitely a fan though I’ve got stung buying a couple old packs of Troegs and Saranac. Gotta watch those dates and it’s usually not worth a few bucks saved to buy a pack that is after season.
That said, pretty big fan of the Victory one which I had fresh though I would rather they add a 4th style at 3 bottles each.

I cannot begin to express my depressed state — Broken Halo has been my favorite brew ever since I first tasted it — the grapefruit, the great hop bite that just pulls back a bit. I’ve tried Rotator, and like Dogfish, Ranger, Real Ale Brewing’s IPA, and others, there’s too much earth for me. I like a bright, softened bitterness that resides the clouds!
I’m really disappointed to see Broken Halo go away! Nice taste, not to carbonated. Rotator, is not a replacement. Will have to try other IPA’s till I find one as good as Broken Halo!
Just dumped my last bottle of Rotator – it sucks!!!!
Since my favorate beer, Broken Halo, has gone away, am trying other IPA’s.
Bring Broken Halo back!!!
I am shocked and upset that you discontinued “Broken Halo”. That was my favorite beer. I’ve tried lots of other IPAs but that beer is as if it was my beer. PLEASE BRING “BROKEN HALO” BACK!!!!!!
Very very disappointed that they discontinued BrokenHalo which has been my favorite beer the last couple of years. Bring it back!!!!!!!!
There is none as good as Broken Halo. Tried everything. Please please please bring it back!
the stupidest mistake ever, bring the Rotator IPA back!!!!
