(Bridgewater, VT) – More Vermont Irene news…
(Above: Long Trail Brewery flooding – posted by Longstaff on Beer Advocate)
Last night, I posted that flooding from Irene virtually destroyed The Alchemist Pub and Brewery. Today, we learn that Long Trail Brewery, among the 25 largest craft breweries in the country, has also been affected but to a much lesser extent.
Courtesy of Jeff Baker of The Farmhouse Tap & Grill on Beer Advocate:
“Just got off the phone with my Long Trail rep. and he said that things are bad, but not as bad as they originally thought they could be. They have water in the brewery and their deck is submerged. But he made it very clear that the beers that are fermenting and conditioning in tanks are totally safe from harm and they have auxiliary power so those beers will be fine. They’re currently not brewing new batches as they work to clean up and continually check their water supply to make sure it’s safe for brewing.
He said too what’s worse is that all the roads that lead to them (and from them) are either under water or totally washed out. He also noted that the people who live on Killington are stuck there because the two roads out are destroyed (also the Killington base lodge collapsed). He said they’ve got their work cut out for them, but they’ve got a plan and are working hard to get back on schedule.”
Meanwhile, here is a short update from The Alchemist Pub and Brewery home page:
“Disaster strikes Waterbury. The Alchemist Pub and Brewery was ruined in a once in a generation flood on Sunday night August 28, 2011. While the cannery is fine and on target to open this coming Friday, the Pub will be closed for the foreseeable future. With our endless thanks and gratitude to our loyal and returning friends, customers and fans, we will be back. Stay tuned…”
From Boston.com’s Steve Greenlee:
“I just received an email from co-owner Jen Kimmich: ‘The pub is completely totalled,’ she wrote. ‘Our brewery and all of the beer inside are ruined. It will take a long time to rebuild. My guess is that the building will be gutted and rebuilt. On a good note, our canning line is running today and we are preparing for a Friday opening. Wish us luck!'”
The Flat Street Brew Pub in Brattleboro also appeared to be completely flooded. The brewery posted a video on its Facebook page yesterday afternoon.
If you know of other breweries and beer businesses being affected by flooding, send them in.

My friend lives around the corner from Long Trail along the same creek. He had major damage done to his property, including the washing away of his bridge. Luckily his house was fine. The houses of two neighbors were washed away.
Thanks for posting, Kevin. I can’t speak for the major media outlets but was glad to give some much-needed coverage here. Hope they get the assistance they need.
Just talked to Long Trail again and they said “Up and running and open for business!”
Great to hear!
That’s great to hear! I vacation up in the Bridgewater Corners area and can’t imagine what damage has been done. Seems much worse than even here in NJ. 🙁
I mean, its great they seem to be open for business again!

Good to hear that LongTrail will pick up the pieces and be up & brewing again, we were going to make a trip too the brewery for the 1st time in many years, but I guess this trip will have too wait.
Cheers,
Clint
My husband and I always stopped for lunch and beer at Long Trail whenever we went to Vermont. We bought many great beers to bring back to Michigan.
So glad the damage was not too bad. We generally stayed near Killington on the road up the mountain.
I live in Bridgewater Corners about 2 miles from Long Trail Brewery. The brewery opened its doors Monday morning very early and for 7 long days, served 3 amazing meals a day for free. They gave ice, water and anything else you needed away for the entire week. This was our command center while we waited for power which was about 7-8 days. I believe there are still people here without power. Here in Bridgewater we were cut off from the rest of the world and Long Trail stepped up and served like I have never seen before. We never saw any state police or state official at all. The local volunteer fire department were working around the clock all week. HEROES! It was a community based support system that brought light to a very dark situation. I am proud to be a member of the Bridgewater community and the selflessness I witnessed will live with me forever. THANK YOU Long Trail Brewery and the amazing staff and Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. Lifesavers and heroes. I should also mention the guys who came from all over Bridgewater with their backhoes and heavy equipment to repair the roads. Phenomenal grassroots effort.
I can’t believe this I travel all the way from Cape Cod, and it’s my husbands favorite place to go
A group of us from PA had stopped in for lunch a few days before Irene hit while touring New England on our antique Brit motorcycles. We also hit the Otter Creek facility too. I knew it mustve gotten affected – and am VERY sorry to see/hear about it. Good luck recovering – I will check in during ski season to see how you are doing!! Our thoughts are with you.
