CBS: ‘Chick Beer’ claims to be the very first beer created by a woman

chick beer

UPDATE: The first statement I mention here appears to be a serious flub by someone at CBS. The brewery’s marketing makes it pretty clear that it is the first beer made FOR women, not the first beer made BY women as CBS suggests. The Huffington Post questioned that claim earlier this month and the marketing, in general, has already drawn lots of criticism and debate.

At the 0:34 mark, these words actually come out of the anchor’s mouth: “[Chick Beer] prides itself on becoming the very first beer created by a woman.”

Wow. What a slap in the face to women in the beer industry. Executives, brewers, organizations like the Pink Boots Society, etc. etc. Hell, Head Brewer, Tonya Cornett of Bend Brewing, won a World Beer Cup small brewery championship in 2008 for…you guessed it…creating beer!

The beer is only available in Maryland currently but the path to global domination will, if all goes to plan, continue through Florida, Texas, California and New York.

Out of the Minhas Craft Brewery Brewmaster’s mouth at 1:57, “We finally hashed out a recipe that I think it one of the best recipes on the planet.” Take that in for a moment…and then…wait, the brewmaster is man?!

At the 2:20 mark, one dude says he won’t drink it because he prefers a heavier beer. He and his buddies are shown drinking cans of Oskar Blues.

Enjoy!

  1. If you want a light beer:

    Bud Select 99 calories
    Chick Beer 97 calories
    Amstel Light 95 calories
    Michelob Ultra 95 calories
    Bud Select 55 55 calories

Chick labeling is stupid — says this “chick”. It’s a called a coozie get it in pink. Who would use Curlz font for a brand? It’s just as bad as Papyrus. And great chick reporting at CBS Early Morning. I guess Kim Jordan is an alien with the other women brewers.

  2. I wonder what Rhonda Kallman, or the brewmaster at Cambridge Brewing Company thinks of the line, “the first beer created by a woman”… jeez’um crow.
Chick Beer is the world’s biggest FAIL.

    **after watching the story**
…So let me get this right… they’re making it because THEY WANTED PINK PACKAGING?!
    Wtf. I hate humanity sometimes.

  3. Derp… my mistake. CBC brewmaster’s a dude.
I thought I had read a story that said their brewer (or at least one of them) was a woman. Commentary fail. :p

  4. Relax, folks. The reporter merely mis-spoke. It happens. I’m certain that none of you has ever made a mistake at work. LOL

  6. @Matt — because the internet is a paradigm of journalistic ethics and accuracy in reporting, right?

  7. Still have mixed feelings about this idea and I havn’t tried the beer but I know its getting allot of polarized attention. Most of the women I talk to hate this idea and are kinda insulted by it, but I also see allot of positive feed back for it. Ether way you feel about it, it does look like a Bud/Miller/Coors style marketing campaign and Im honestly surprised that an independent business owner decided to go for it before they did. If shes successful good for her. Im just hoping this doesn’t go to help create gender divisions that dont need to exist.

  8. Clicked on the “lots of criticism and debate” link to see that the Google results placed our blog number 3, between Time and the Huffington Post. I’m guessing it’s the last time THAT’S gonna happen!

  9. Wow anyone can paste a label on a contracted bottle, shame on Minhas for supporting this crap.

  11. Lost Coast Brewery was founded by two women in the late 80’s and in ancient times, brewers were women. This was just a bad fluff piece.
