Oliver: some craft brewers don’t get respect because they dress like small children

Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, may be considered one of the most respected men in craft beer and perhaps beer in general. So why not use that industry cred to throw your weight around in an interview with Craft Business Daily?

Conversely, I run into some craft brewers who say, ‘We don’t get respect from the local press.’ And, well, could that be because you’re dressed like a small child? And you’ve been trying to disabuse people of the idea that you’re little kids playing with fun toys? And you’re a professional. Well, all these little things matter. How do you communicate?

  1. Will be waiting on pictures of him cleaning out the mash tun with his fancy thousand dollar suits.

  2. It depends on the brewery. If they want to get into the high class restaurants then putting on a nice suit while selling their goods definitely matters. If the brewery wants to be the tap at the dive bar, then a suit would probably be a negative. Also Robbie, Garrett didn’t say to be in a suit while brewing, his example was with a winemaker at an event selling his wares, big difference.

  3. I’m just saying the majority of brewers aren’t around to just dazzle investors and any potential buyers. They work hard on creating something they love and when they do something formal in no way are they dressed as extravagant as Oliver. Craft beer isn’t a runway fashion show. When’s the last time he actually got a hand in the brewing process on a daily basis?

  4. Roger I guess you wouldn’t have been one of the craft brewers who asked him the question then 🙂

Robbie: Garrett’s statement was addressed to “some craft brewers” who asked the question, not the majority, and that was his response. You seem to believe Garrett is less of a “real” brewer anyway, since he does not do it on a daily basis, so you seem to hold other grudges against him. Personally, I’m not a fan of his constant pushing of beer and food pairings.
