Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon beer called “foul abomination” by local magazine

Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Porter-bj

(Newport, OR) – Let’s break it down…

1) On August 25th, I posted the label for Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple PORTER. The post got shared around several hundred times. Needless to say, people were pumped.

2) About four weeks pass with nary a mention about the beer except for this cryptic post from the brewery. Something about hopoes. Say what?

3) Then we come to today when Rogue Ales sent this tweet. [(Ignore if not a Twitter User): There was no other tweet before this. It’s like if you or me took put “RT” then our screen name and then the tweet we were going to send…huh?]

Anyway, the link it was pointing to is this one. It says that Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple ALE will go on sale on Saturday, September 23rd beginning at 7am. The beer will only be available by the case for $156. $13 per bottle.

Case only? Why does it now say ALE? Why the abrupt notice?

4) Oh wait, there is another link. Let’s see what it says…

Strange but fair enough. So it’s a brown ale now…still no indication of ABV…

5) A few hours later, Willamette Week, a local ‘zine in Portland posts this scatching review of the beer:

Rogue Ales’ latest creation appeared in the WW office this morning, a collaboration with Voodoo Doughnuts called the Bacon Maple Ale, based on That Doughnut. Whilst we’re loath to give any attention to this blatant gimmickry, after tasting it, we feel a civic obligation to warn anyone who might be considering splashing $156 on a case.

The quotes that follow that intro are priceless.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what is going on with this beer after all that.

  1. “Blatant gimmickry”? Heaven forbid someone expands and tries something different. Rogue always takes things to the next level, I wonder if the reviewer of this beer is even familiar with the brand. I agree that shelling out $156 just to try a new beer is a little steep but at least give the company some kudos for having the sack to give it a shot.

  3. Rogue trying something different and taking things to the next level? More like cashing in on someone else’s success — specifically Boca Raton brewer Funky Buddha’s Maple Bacon Coffee Porter (or Wake Up It’s Morning, the imperial version), which predates this beer by at least a year and has been incredibly successful. The only thing original here is their pricing on it, which is just another example in a long line of ripoffs.

Way to be original, Rogue. Keep on “pushing those boundaries”.

  4. Like me it appears the writers at that paper don’t like smoked beers.

Unlike me, they don’t know their taste isn’t everyones, and that just because you personally don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s bad

  5. Cashing in? I must say that anyone making this statement is obviously completely oblivious to anything going on elsewhere in the world of craft beer. Breakfast stouts have been around for a long time, most consisting of maple syrup, bacon, brown sugars etc. A great example is the Canadian or Kentucky Breakfast Stout from Founders Brewing and that’s just two of many out there. I agree that only having the option to buy a case at $156 is a bit steep but to say that Rogue is cashing in is ridiculous. You wouldn’t say that about the tons of oatmeal stouts or smoked porters on the market.

  6. You can buy a single bottle on the rogue website. I bought two bottles, I haven’t tried them yet, now I’m a little nervous.

  7. You can get them by the 750ml bottle for $13 each at the Issaquah Brewhouse. I would assume other Rogue brew houses also have them.

  8. Work at a liquor store in West Virginia. Rouge is sending us 5 cases of this, from what I’ve heard from people who has had this beer is either you love or hate it, no grey area. When it shows up I’ll let u know
