WaPo: Anheuser-Busch to launch new 8 oz. cans next month
I’ve linked to this article a couple times now so you may have seen this though I haven’t called it out until now. I was unable to procure the original press release so here, once again, is a tantalizing snippet from the Washington Post’s Greg Kitsock. Hit it, Greg!
Anheuser-Busch has announced that it’s introducing a sleek, new model of eight-ounce can this October. Consumers will have their choice of four brands — Budweiser “Half Pints,” Bud Light “Azulitas,” Bud Light Lime “Limeys,” and Michelob Ultra “Quenchers” — in both 12- and 24 can cartons.
Between this, potential new 24 oz. cans and Bud Light Platinum, AB appears to be aggressively seeking ways to capitalize on its brand using new packages. Stay tuned.
Breweries: A-B InBev, Anheuser-Busch
8 oz cans might work better for very high ABV beers as the drinker would need less to drink to get the same effect as a normal 12oz beer. But since AB InBev beers tend to be lower ABV than craft beers I don’t see why anyone would need an 8oz beer. Gimmick I think for macro beer, but probably has merit for strong craft beers.
The good news? 4 oz less of Bud.
That should be called out on the can with a big starburst.

They realized something had to be done with the spilled beer. Aha! Let’s fill 4 oz cans with it and make it look ‘different!’
These are being made just to take up more space on the shelves, leaving less room for competition, its pretty ridiculous
Hmm, that or they want to have these next to the cash register for impulse buys.
I think the issue is that their market is aging, and those 65+ year olds can’t drink like they used to. Medications you know…..
I’d rather have the 8oz can. Wished they would stock the stores in Ohio.
I first tasted the 8 oz beer in Gila Bend, AZ it was 125 degrees and 12oz buds were warm before you got your thirst quenched. The 8 oz was cold to the end. Wish all the brewers would offer them.
I am from GB. Forty years ago it was possible to buy half depth cans of beer, same diameter, just half as deep (I don’t remember the fl. oz quantity). My host called them ‘nips’ and the intention was that they should quench a thirst, but not be for a long session. They came into their own in the cool box at the beach, buried in the ice like gold nuggets. It has been disappointing to be unable to find them on the shelves in subsequent visits. They are what made America great, like bags the size of pillowcases filled with potato chips, but these, too, are not in evidence.
