NPR: Surly open to using public subsidies, brewery site finalists to be named this year
…if all goes to plan.
[Founder, Omar] Ansari has been meeting today with consultants to narrow the list of sites for his new brewery. He plans to announce site finalists for his new brewery in a month or two and hopes to finish the project in 2013. While some say that’s an ambitious timeline, cities are lining up to try to lure him. St. Paul and Minneapolis have changed their local ordinances to accommodate his vision, and other cities have expressed interest.
At the end of the audio, the NPR reporter says that Surly is open to using public subsidies. This is the first I have heard about the possibility of Surly Brewing using public funding for its planned $20 million brewery. A press release from February reads, “Surly Brewing is not looking for tax breaks or subsidies […]” Meh, things change…
Breweries: Surly Brewing
I don’t see anywhere in your quote of the story that Surly is looking for public funding. Changing laws isn’t public funding. What am I missing?
Mike, I should’ve clarified. It’s at the end of the audio that NPR says it.
