Many start-up breweries have turned to a site called Kickstarter, a service that makes it possible for individuals to “invest” money into breweries for a reward other than equity in the business.
A few factoids about raising money with Kickstarter:
1) Some breweries are being turned down while others are being accepted. I’d estimate that at least 25-30 breweries have been turned down based on the acceptance rate for projects. If anyone has insight on what works and what doesn’t, please share in the comments.
2) The number of breweries that have been funded: 9. Total raised: $224k.
Mystery Brewing $44,259 Chapel Hill, NC
Two Deep Brewing $21,328 Indianapolis, IN
City Brewshop $4,825 New York City, NY
Natian Brewery $1,825 Portland, OR
Armadillo Ale Works $34,002 Denton, TX
Wilderness Brewing $41,099 Kansas City, MO
Brickside Brewery $21,971 Mohawk, MI
HiJinx Brewing $14,439 Allentown, PA
Pipeworks Brewing $40,075 Chicago, IL
3. Total breweries unfunded (they didn’t hit their goal before time expired): 10.
4. The number of breweries that are seeking funding now: 7 including Rogness Brewing which is giving it a second go.
Check out all the projects.
Nice post! I supported Wilderness Brewing, they seem to have a good plan.

Hoping to be added to that list of successful breweries funded through Kickstarter (http://kck.st/rstOl3)! And I had not realized that so many folks have been turned down. No insight there, other than to maybe believe in your project and fight for it. I was first not accepted, but wouldn’t take no for an answer!
I don’t have insight either. But perhaps the reviewers from Kickstarter try to narrow down the sites by how successful they think they will be. Kickstarter obviously wants their users to be successful. From the above stats, 50% seems pretty good, especially since those successful raised at least 40K. Do you think the other 30-40 maybe have dragged down that average by 10/60 succeeding? Maybe they review business plans and are geniuses.
