TTB greenlights three beers for DraftMark™ packaging

(St. Louis, MO) – You are looking at the first beers to get approval for Anheuser-Busch’s new DraftMark™ system. If you’ve been paying attention, you saw me post this on Monday:

Meanwhile, according to a source, Anheuser-Busch is set to release its own beer dispensing system for the home called DraftMark™. The source said it would compete with MillerCoors’ Home Draft® system in that it will hold beer fresh for up to thirty days. This will be the company’s first trial into anything resembling a mini keg here in the U.S..

What is surprising is that Bud Light hasn’t received approval yet though these things sometimes trickle in a day or two later. Only Budweiser, Shock Top and Bass have received approval. This may be a way of reviving interest in Budweiser and Bass.

The company has been interested in draft beer for the home for quite some time now, even filing a patent in 2009. UPDATE: Didn’t search back far enough: here’s the patent application for this.

In lieu of an official announcement that hasn’t come yet, how do we think this is going to work? These are the only images with which we have to work. My guess is that the word “refill” means that there are filled bags that you buy in the cooler at the store that you insert into the container through the side. Then somehow latch the top of the bag to the container and voila…draft beer! When the bag is empty, it can be replaced with another one without replacing the whole container. Perhaps more environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient than other packages in the market?

Wait and see…
