Not Fun: DC bans sales of single beer bottles in some wards

Not a new thing necessarily but DCist called attention to it on Monday. No bomber for you!

Ironically enough, the two-pack is the new single beer — the very same single beer that was banned throughout large swaths of the city starting in 2008. That year, the D.C. Council made selling single beers illegal in wards 2 and 6 and in Mount Pleasant; since then, the ban has expanded to cover all of wards 4, 7 and 8. (Fearing the voting power of those likely to drink large single-sale bottles of Belgian ales, exceptions were worked into the law for wards 2 and 6.)

  1. Serious question here. What does this law hope to accomplish? What is the reasoning behind it?

With some strange laws I can understand at least the intent but with this one it just encourages people to drink more which is usually the exact opposite effect than they are seeking.

I guess maybe I just need some context, can anyone help?

  2. Stores can apply for single bottle license. Some of them have it and sell singles now. I think the initial reason was to stop people from drinking them on the streets in a bag. It was causing crime and loitering. If I remember correctly.
