Rumors swirl around Westvleteren XII U.S. release

(Belchertown, MA) – Some interesting talk taking place between the Shelton Brothers, who will be importing Westvleteren XII this spring, Beer Advocate and Beer Writer, Andy Crouch.

It started with this tweet from Crouch:

Interested in learning what importers & wholesalers are paying for Westvleteren 12. Suggested US retail $ is complete rip @sheltonbrothers

Then from Beer Advocate:

@BeerScribe current estimated wholesale price for the 6-pack of Westy 12 & two glasses will be $50-60 #beer #craftbeer

Then this from The Shelton Brothers:

@BeerScribe yeah, uh, what suggested retail $? Meeting with the Abbey in December, details after that…

Then from Beer Advocate:

@sheltonbrothers @beerscribe Apparently there’s retailers who think they already know the W/R pricing. It’s going to be interesting.

Then from The Shelton Brothers:

@BeerAdvocate who knows…we don’t know what the other importer is telling people…interesting is an understatement!

And from Beer Advocate:

@sheltonbrothers Then there’s consumer fears that retailers will break apart packs for individual bottle sales for more $$$.

Interesting stuff. Is there any way this will go for less than $100 at retail?

Here’s what went down with the Belgium release.

  1. I can see why people are afraid, but I would rather just buy one or two of these beers (and ensure that I get one) as opposed to paying $100+ for a pack. If they’re split up more people will have a chance to enjoy the beer w/o going to Belgium.

  2. $50-$60 for six bottles and two glasses seems like a bargain, all things considered. Sign me up. $100 is obscene.

  3. that would be the wholesale price. which is why I’m thinking this will easily go for $99 or higher.

of course, that’s all speculation. nothing official.

  4. When I see prices like this, all I can think of is how much other great beer I could buy for $100. No thanks. If I had a chance to actually go to the Abbey and buy a few bottles I certainly would, but this is insane. I would consider dropping $50, but that’s about the limit, so I guess I’m not getting any.
