(Milton, DE) – Though nationally beloved, do Dogfish Head‘s neighbors feel that way about the brewery? Not so much according to WBOC TV.
Neighbors in a housing development gave the Milton town council all it could handle during a four hour public hearing on Wednesday, delaying a vote on Dogfish Head’s proposed expansion.
At issue is whether an expansion would create more traffic and problems around the small community. One man in the video cited concerns of wear and tear on the roads. Another worries about other possible businesses setting shop there.
If or when expansion does eventually get approved, Dogfish Head plans to invest nearly $50 million over a three year period. To put that into perspective, despite being the same size as Stone Brewing, that is nearly double Stone’s investments in the San Diego area. Dogfish Head’s grand plan starts with the addition of a 75,000 square foot warehouse.
So, when will the brewery offer to have a beer summit with these community folks if they haven’t done so yet?
Or maybe they should pack it up in Milton and head down to Asheville…
That’s pretty staggering. People are denying a huge opportunity for their community to expand and develop yet self-centered idiots are denying this. I’m amazed. Hopefully Dogfish Head can develop this audacious project.
But those roads, man….wear and tear….
Idiots? Maybe they’re small town people who like a sleepy little community and want to keep it that way… probably part of the reason they live there.
Just because you/other people like beer/Dogfish, etc. doesn’t mean the people that inhabit the place where the brewery is, want it there. It’s an extreme comparison but: I wouldn’t want a nuclear power plant in my community but there are millions of people who wouldn’t mind.
And “Oh relax, it’s just a brewery” isn’t the point. The principle is that it’s up to the community. We’re going through something very similar in this area with the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft, wanting to build a casino in Foxborough across from Gillette Stadium.
Stupid for them to complain IMHO as they bought those houses right next to the brewery. It’s not like the brewery hasn’t been there. The land is an old canning company so it has historically always had big trucks on that side of town. Shame that they don’t want the company to invest. Milton was lucky they came there and not elsewhere.
I live in this neighborhood. My neighbors are largely retirees and weekenders, and it’s a shame what they are doing to the largest employer in the town. I have a feeling they will eventually drive them out.
Part of the allure of Dogfish is the story of how it came about. It would be a travesty to pull up roots over a town skirmish. Asheville is defintiely a great place to thrive and I would especially love it since I’m an hour away. My motives aside, you got a great story to continue in Milton. It has inspired me to write my story in a similar fashion.
