Dutch brewer knocks Duvel, other Belgian beers

“[By contrast] all the small Belgian family-owned brewers kept making good beers – but in the last ten years quality has decreased dramatically, even in beers like Duvel. It’s not like it used to be, or maybe my taste has changed. Beers owned by the bigger breweries, like Leffe, those beers are very dull now. They used to be very good beers. That’s why Belgium is going, unless new Belgian brewers pick up the mantle and make good beer. But that’s personal – I like hops and except for a few good Saisons, I don’t think you find many hops in Belgium now.”

  1. Come come now. You can find TONS of overpriced mediocre Belgian beers that are (supposed to be) Hoppy but are light years past their “best by” dates in the US.

  2. I think this has more to do with mass production and how it effects quality, rather than how long it has sat on a shelf.

when i read the comment, i suspected that this might be a Shelton Brother label… and voila. small batch, imported by hand.

  3. Ah the joy’s of the confluence of growth, choice and magnitude of good beer. The new frontier, good breweries bashing each other to make points.

My favorite line translated regarding Duvel…

“This Beer is now terrible….of maybe it’s just me.”

    The regarding all Belgian Beer…

“It’s really going away, they stink. There are no hops. I like hops. But, hey that is just me.”

Yes, deer friend, what the world needs know, is another Imperial IPA, Tripel, Saison hybrid so we can clap like seals, like I need a hole in my head.

  4. How about the Belgian/American hybrids like Urthel Hop-It? You can’t deny that there is hop-forward character in beers like that…
