Austrian monastery brewery hopes to be recognized as world’s eight Trappist brewery

Currently there are seven Trappist monastery breweries authorized to use the “Authentic Trappist Product” label by the International Trappist Association. Six are in Belgium, one is in the Netherlands. It looks like an 8th monastery is applying for authorization to brew beer under the official designation. The monastery of Engelszell Stift has filed an application and expects to be notified of the ITAs decision in 4-5 weeks.

Operations began last week.

  1. I thought Mont des Cats was just given back the appellation just this past year. Oh, they did. Although their beer is being made by Chimay, they were still granted authority from the Vatican to use the appellation again.

  2. Although they did not request use for it on beers. And they need to brew within the walls to be able to use it. Which, I guess, they have no plans to do so. So I misspoke a bit.
