(Portland, OR) – Burnside Brewing issued a statement on its Facebook page in response to the Hindu community taking offense to the use of its deity in a new beer’s branding.
We at Burnside Brewing Co. aspire to create exceptional craft beer while sustaining an enjoyable, livable workplace for our crew of approximately 20 employees.
In response to pleas from the Hindu community we have decided to postpone the limited release of “Kali-ma” our imperial wheat ale flavored with Indian spices and Scotch-Bonnet peppers. It is NEVER our intention at Burnside to offend or alienate any race, creed, religion or sexual orientation. The inspiration for the beer label simply came from a favorite childhood movie in the “Indiana Jones” series and we were unaware that it could be offensive to anyone.
We are currently scrambling to re-name the beer and intend to release it soon afterwards. To those who have been patiently waiting, we humbly ask that you wait just a little longer and to anyone we have offended we sincerely apologize. We will keep our loyal customers informed on the new release dates. Thank you for all your patience and understanding in this matter and we hope you will enjoy this ale and all the fine ales we produce here at Burnside.
Sincerely, the crew and ownership of Burnside Brewing.
Pretty cheap publicity stunt. They should have branded the beer in the name of other religion’s god-men instead, that would have been a bigger publicity resulting in west asia offering bounty in millions on their heads. Hindus are tolerant so these cheap beggars get away with anything. No wonder US is on the perpetual walk by the shit hole.
This is a complete joke! If this is how things are going to be from now on, this country is going in the crapper. A man can’t even take poop without offending someone. Burnside Brewing is one of the most innovative and creative breweries in PDX, and for ANYONE to take offense to the name of a beer is just downright shameful. Guess what, I take offense to the Hindu Community trying to enforce their beliefs in OUR country! If you don’t like it then GTFO!
