(Tampa, FL) – Two breweries are following in the footsteps of Highland Brewing in raising money for Ben Harris’ memorial fund. Harris was the employee at RedHook Brewery that was killed in an accident while working with a keg. Harris’ wife will give birth to their baby in December and the memorial fund was established to raise money for the baby.
In a touching nod to Harris, Cigar City Brewing and The Bruery have chosen Father’s Day as the day to raise money.
Per its Facebook page, here is what Cigar City Brewing is doing…
Sunday we’re selling snifters and growlers of Brandy barrel-aged Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout. All proceeds will go to the family of Ben Harris, fallen Redhook Brewery employee. Growlers will be $20, although that doesn’t include the price of the growler. It’ll be like any other growler fill: bring in one to fill or buy a new one ($4). And 32oz fills only. Limit one per person. Please note that the barrel-aged beers we release are generally not meant to age very long as we feel they’ve aged plenty in the barrels, and being the sensitive nature of growlers we encourage people to drink these growlers fresh! We have a VERY limited supply of kegs so growlers will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. Doors open at 11am.
The Bruery heard about it and is following suit. Per its newsletter…
This Sunday we will be celebrating Fathers Day by helping our some brewery friends in need. As many of you may have heard, tragedy struck Redhook Ale Brewery in New Hampshire this past April when a keg suddenly exploded while being cleaned, killing Ben Harris, a 26 year old packaging team member, husband and expectant father. Our friends at Cigar City in Tampa, Florida came up with the idea of selling special draft beers this Fathers Day, with all of the proceeds going to charity. We thought that idea was so great that we decided to do it ourselves. Following their lead, this Sunday we will be serving a keg of Black Tuesday, with every dollar from that keg going to a fund set up for Ben’s wife and child. One of the great things about the brewing industry is the sense of camaraderie felt between companies and staffs. Please come out this Sunday and support this great cause. Additional donations will be graciously received all weekend long!

All though I live in Seattle this was the first I had heard of the tradgedy. I work in the beer industry in Washington ( not with Redhook ) and was very pleased to hear of the other breweries jumping in to support the family. Cheers.
