(Lahaina, Maui, HI) – Maui Brewing Founder, Garrett Marrero, was recently on Basic Brewing TV to talk about the brewery.

In yet another poke at Kona, Marrero said, “All of our beer comes from Hawaii. We don’t believe in producing it elsewhere and calling it local. This is all 100% Maui-made. […] Unfortunately, the consumer has become distrusting of most products in the world and that is because a lot of the big companies do what they do in saying it is this but it is really [that] even though it has a label that looks like this. As big as we are, a lot of people ask me “Oh, you must be brewing in the mainland now?” And there is just no way [that we’d do that].”

More importantly, the brewery is adding two more fermenters to its production facility though it just a temporary fix for rapidly-growing demand. The tanks bring total fermentation space to 1,400 barrels. Of the nearly 18,000 barrels that the company produced in 2011, approximately 17,400 came out of the production location while 600 came out of the brewpub. The production location houses a 25-barrel two-vessel system while the brewpub houses a 7-barrel system with only two 7-barrel fermenters and one 14-barrel fermenter.

Maui Brewing will break ground in the fall or winter on a new production facility in the central part of the island. Capacity will eventually be expanded up to 100,000 barrels though initial capacity will be 40,000 barrels. As part of the new location, the company plans to expand into distilling with bourbon and spirits based around local breadfruit.
